Aaron,
I was in the boat that caught 3 skis – mine were the 32 and 37. Last Saturday, I caught another 32 and lost another one near 40. Plus, lost a very nice Bass at the boat. I found a nice little transition area in around 18 ft.

Piper is her name. Yup, I told John that I heard about his place from you and IDA/IDO. He said good things about you, Stacie, and the Rooster Rouser that iDoHunting held last year. I’ll need to get up there for the rouser this year…
Great pics and great year! What part of the state did you hunt in?
RR — We were hunting some private land with corn strips, CRP, and cattail sloughs. In all situations without dogs, we are very methodical on our walks – lots of zig-zag and never just a straight line. All of our crew were good shots also, so that helps, and I’d say we only lost 2 or 3 birds per day (if that). As for birds in the ditches, some are huntable. It depends on nearest location of buildings, etc. Over the last few years, SD has had several court cases that dealt with road/ditch hunting. As far as I know, it is still legal, but you should read the SD regs just to be sure.
Jay — I totally agree with you that hunting with dogs is so much fun. We usually have 1 or 2 dogs, but it just happened this year that no dogs were ready (i.e., too old/young). About 2 weeks ago, I went to ND with some buddies that had 2 dogs (Springer & Vichsla) and we did AWESOME there also!
Man, I should really make another trip to use up that 2nd session…
Thx guys. I go up every year over Labor Day and last year the hot spot was Big Narrows, Portage Bay, and few areas around Falcon Island. The hot bait was orange/black pacemaker. I’ll experiment the first day this year and see what happens.
BTW – we might have hit that reef last year. On the last day, we were heading home from Big Narrows to Oak Island and tagged an unmarked reef in about 2 ft of water going 40+ mph. No good. Took us 3 more hours to get back to the lodge at 5 mph on a swiss-cheese prop and bent shaft. Needless to say, I wrote a huge “NO” on my map…
Yup, caught about 25 fish in 3 hours. Our boat was trolling and casting for Pike. Of the 25 fish, I think the count was something like 15+ pike, 6 bass, 1 crappie, and 1 rock bass. Unfortunately most were on the small size. Everything went back in the water except the crappie (wanted a fresh fish to eat). Best lures were Rapala DT6, DT10 and Fat Rap (can’t remember what size). Hot colors were silver, fire tiger, and grey crawfish/chart. Also caught a few pike slow trolling a pike minnow rig.
Fished WBL last night in fishing league and it definitely is at the lowest level that I’ve ever launched. I estimate water level at about 1 to 2 feet below normal. All boats were able to launch successfully, but you needed to back in a ways. Loading was best served by cranking rather than power loading. It’s a bit shallow, so caution around the launch is wise.
Also witnessed a boat go ramming through the reef directly out from the launch. I don’t think he realized how shallow it was. I believe his Johnson will need some TLC now…
You’re right, this is/was a great fish story. I grew up in NJ, read New Jersey Outdoors often, and remember when this fish was caught. Somewhere I even have an original version of the New Jersey Outdoors issue with the article; probably in a box somewhere. Anyway, it was big news at the time.
Fished WBL for a few hours on Sunday evening with 1 follow (40ish) and a few small pike.
Mine is fairly easy:

Go Blue Streaks!
My favorite is the Heddon Moss Boss. I vary color/size depending on weather conditions and water clarity. Can’t begin to count how many bass I’ve caught on this lure, with many hawgs included.
Here’s the latest news release from the DNR on this topic.
Walleye Regulation Change Proposed For Lake Vermilion (2005-03-15)
My son and I spent about 3 hours on Fish on Saturday, with nothing to show. Fished many depths in the water column, mostly on the mid-lake hump/reef. Only a few bites. Didn’t see much on the camera either.
Holy cow; awesome pictures!
My wife and I stayed at a B&B in Alaska several years ago. The guy who owned it used to be a commercial fisherman (before the Valdez oil spill) and he told us amazing stories of HUGE waves that would crash over the boat. I’m guessing they were like the ones on that web site.
Only hunted Saturday a.m. due to other commitments. Saw 3 does, 13 wood docks, and 2 beavers. No good shots.
Just got permission to hunt some private land that has a 14 pointer runnin’ around. Need to scout that area soon.

In regards to the DT series cranks, I have also had them break at the lip. On one crank, the whole lip came out, but I was able to super-glue it back in place. It does catch fish though. I’ve caught good numbers and size of bass and pike on the DT 10.
I’ve had some good deer kills with a bow mostly. My best gun shot is actually 5 shots while pheasant/grouse hunting in SD. A group of us were walking a short grass field that is known to hold Sharptail grouse. About half way down the field, a group of 20-30 birds arose. I unloaded all 5 shells from my Rem 870 pump and ended up with 5 sharptails. I purchased the rounds that night.

Ditto to JickyJack. I purchased mine at Mills Fleet Farm too. I’ve had it for 2 years now and it’s holding up well.

I fished w/ some guy from the site who drank my beer, didnt net my big fish (23-25″) but still somehow left a good impression.
Hmmm… sounds like JickyJack
The site only shows 8 teams registered for the June tourney, but it appears that was last updated in March. What’s the latest count on # of teams?
Also, what time do launches start and when is weigh-in?
Thanks.
