I have had real good luck rippin’ buckshots below the RW dam during the cold months… but of course the half a minnow head on there doesn’t hurt either!!!

I’ve also heard of walleyes being taken (actually quite large walleyes) while trolling big spoons in search of norderens… if the forage is indeed something like good sized ciscoes, then why not!!!

Thanks guys!!! The river it is! It sure was nice not having to battle the current (aka “user friendly”) on the Lake, but it ain’t much fun not catchin’ either! I will give the moving water a go on Wednesday. So have you guys noticed the fish have a preference to trolling cranks upstream or down?

Sounds like some typical fishing for NW Wisconsin…. walleyes are certainly hard to come by this time of year, so don’t feel too bad! I was up at our cabin (near Turtle Lake) this last weekend, and FINALLY decided to focus on catching crappies and bass on the home lake…… instead of NOT catching walleyes. Sometimes it’s better to take was given to you and be happy. Actually it was incredible fishing… my gal and I caught nearly 100 crappies in a couple hours, then had our way with the largies… nothin’ big, but sometimes catchin’ is better than fishin’!!!

    Hey H2o~
Kinda figured that would be the case… we did try “moving up” and trolling the blades fast along the weeds, but soon got frustrated with constantly pulling in salad. I’ll definately try the aggresive casting into pockets method next evening I’m out. Over the years, I’ve picked up alot of nice walleyes casting original floating raps over shallow evening feeding grounds… and I sure like the way the pile drive the lure!!! Those rattlin’ traps do make alot of commotion (which I’m sure is key in the more stained water), so I’ll be sure to pick up a few more on my next visit to FF too! I’ll let ya know how it goes next time out….

Again, thanks for the advise… it’s appreciated.

    Splitshot,

If you are looking for walleye you may want to drive a little bit north and east of Cumberland… Long Lake and Red Cedar Lake both support a good population of walleye, and are by far your best bet in the area. It’s about a half hour-45 minute drive (and usually well worth it) to both. Long also has a good number of nice bass (both largies and smallies) which, as reported to me from a buddy, were really hitting good this last weekend. He also informed me that the walleye action on Long was hot and heavy but only lasted about 45 minutes from 9:15-10:00 pm. 16 foot along weedlines.

I also believe there are Musky in Red Cedar… however, I’ve not fished them so I can’t give you specifics.

GOOD LUCK & I wouldn’t mind hearing how the vacay fishing goes!
