I remember fishing Lake Menomin last summer for bass. Seemed like the lake bite totally died and the only place you could get bit was in the river.

The lake isn’t very far from my house…it is a good lake, I have fished it many times. However, you won’t get them on swim jigs or frogs ((river boys))

July 15, 2007 at 5:49 pm #590411I agree….those hooksets were weak.
Did you see George Cochran holding his rod in the power fishing skit????
July 15, 2007 at 4:44 pm #590391I’m not worried about the line breaking…65 lb powerpro doesn’t break easily. I also understand that in a tournament, every fish counts and that is why I think flipping the fish in is superior because it eliminates the 2 seconds where the fish is sitting in the water with his head out of the water while you are reaching for the net.
I disagree that the fish doesn’t have a lot of strength while on top of the water, that is actually when I lose most of my fish because of the hook coming out.
Most likely if a fish comes off while being flipped in it will be at the time when his body is leaving the water and the cause of it will the hook coming out because of the increased weight on the hook. So if the fish is sitting on top of the water with his head out of the water, isn’t that basically the same as having the fish sit there with his head out of the water waiting for a net?
July 15, 2007 at 3:43 pm #590365I see it as a money issue as well…that is why I believe flipping the fish in is the less risky move.
June 23, 2007 at 3:00 pm #583423I think you have to take into consideration what kind of tournament you are fishing.
If you are fishing a series of tournaments for points that will qualify you a larger tournament, I would get the small limit and then try to cull with bigger fish.
If you are jackpotting a tournament it makes more sense to me to try and get a big limit because you are looking to cash, not get points from a small limit.
That’s how I always looked at it.
June 2, 2007 at 1:59 pm #577283I am using 20-25 lb Seagaur and they bite through it like it is 2 lb mono . I lost 8 lures yesterday in 4 hours
June 1, 2007 at 11:46 pm #577172I’m not sure who started the idea of waiting 2-3 seconds but IMO that has nothing to do when you should set the hook. If I feel the fish right away, I set the hook and if I feel the fish after 5 seconds, I set the hook. Feel for the fish…don’t wait for a certain number of seconds. If the fish missed it, a 3 second delayed hookset will not change anything!
May 31, 2007 at 3:07 am #576560I get em good on the inside weedlies in the morning/evening
I’ve used PowerPro but haven’t tried the wire but because of the Zebras, the lake is now 10 ft visibility so I prefer Flourocarbon.

April 30, 2007 at 12:39 pm #566163What pound test are you using for that power pro? I had a similar problem with any pound test under 30. I contacted the company and they said it was either my knots (which it wasn’t) or I was setting the hook to hard.
I still use power pro but just not lighter than 50 lb. I never break fish off on the hookset now.
March 3, 2007 at 1:44 am #544118What’s even more impressive than a top 10 finish for my good buddy ben is that he did all his pre-fishing during his 21st birthday week and didn’t touch a drop of alcohol.
That’s dedication
Kick some [censored] tomorow dude…we’re all rooting for you
February 27, 2007 at 3:05 am #542040One more thing to add…I watched this with a buddy that was experiencing tournament fishing for the first time and after they showed the clip the first time, (with many more times to follow) my buddy asked if that is how all tournament fisherman drove their boat.
February 27, 2007 at 3:03 am #542039Although I am not saying what he did was right…wasn’t the boat he blew by a camera boat and not actually fishing? Weren’t the other spectators boats sitting in what I would assume to be the main channel?
If I were a spectator boat, I would stay out of the main channel so that other boats could pass by.
