Makes sense. I have created maps using other programs from collected tracks on my HB. But yes, I wasn’t aware the Side-scan mosaics and satellite imagery was only on the PC program.

Still doesn’t change my view. I think I’d still go with the basic version.

Ya, that’s what I thought. I don’t think I’d go for the pro version myself. I have a 997c and the processor is slow enough with basemaps, let alone trying to get satellite overlays, 3d shading, and side-scan draping on the screen.

I could see these features working a bit better on the newer HBs but those are a bit pricey for me.

Looks interesting. I could have some fun with this as some of the chain lakes off our main one are not on HB base maps or the Navionics cards.

What speed do they recommend you record at? Can you cruise around at say, 20mph, if your transducer continues to get a good return? Or do you need to go at 5-10mph to get sufficient bottom reading and point data?

    Not exactly true.

You can purchase a Y – cable like this one:
    http://www.ebay.ca/itm/HUMMINBIRD-AS-SI-DB-Y-SIDE-IMAGING-DOWN-IMAGING-Y-Cable-720055-1-/400409295048

It should allow you to hook up your internal thru-hull transducer and your DI transducer to the same HB unit. With this installed it will automatically choose the thru-hull for 2D and DI from the DI-transducer.

If you’d like to choose which transducer you’d like to use at any given moment then you would need that switch.

Well, the Challenge is doing what they meant it to do…I’m seriously considering going out and buying a lead core set up with various scatter raps…

Hmm… the Red Team pulled ahead. Looks like they are killing the walleye today. I wonder if they came across a big school of perch or crappy to pad that ‘other’ category.

Does anyone have any opinions on Norge’s seafoam cleaning technique. I have a 115 2 stroke yamaha that i just bought and was thinking i might do this to make sure it is clean and good to go before putting it through it’s paces.

Ive just heard varied opinions on the pros and potential harm seafoam may do to motors.

One thing I’ve noticed as a guide is that a large number of fishermen have never really fished with a pro or guide that really knows slow death rigs inside & out. As a result, it’s hard for them to believe just how effective the plain & simple slow death rig can be.

As for this smile blade/slow death rig, I have read about it but have not fished it yet. It does appear to have potential and I intend to make comparisons this summer with the traditional slow death rig.

If it even comes close to being as effective as the traditional slow death rig, then more experimentation will be necessary to figure out where & when to use it instead of or in conjunction with the traditional rig.

Just for reference, the traditional slow death rig has put more fish in my boat for the past 8 years than any other technique I use through out the entire year. Which means replacing it, is a pretty tall order.

Very interesting. I’ve never fished a slow death rig, and this is the first time i’ve really heard about it. I might have to try it out this season. Do you have any tips or links to places to learn more about making them, and the proper time of year and conditions to use this?

    Thanks

DanK, I don’t have the unit quite yet. Hoping to have it in the next week or two, then I’ll get it installed. Not a bit rush as we still have 1.5 ft of ice.

Thanks for pointing out wired2fish, I’ll check it out.

Well, I don’t doubt that it will be an ongoing learning experience. It’s just something that will take time and experience out on the water. I fish a larger lake that is considered quite tough in the area (if you don’t have years of experience knowing their specific movements and hot spots for time of year), so i’m excited to observe what is actually going on in the places that I frequent and find where the fish are moving to.

    Thanks guys.

I have seen Doug’s videos and I’ve been soaking up this info like crazy over this long winter. Doug’s seminar is good but I would like to see peoples methods in action out on the boat. I like your pictures Reddog, as this is more of what I was looking for.

I guess the end result is I know how it works, roughly how to interpret the screen (I have a job which uses 3D interpretation and projections, so not hard for me to grasp), and an idea at what type of structures walleye stick to.

Right now I need to just get my unit, install, and get out and spend time with it. Just kinda hard when i still have 1.5 ft of ice in front of my dock and it just snowed another 5cm this morning and there calling for another 5cm today…

Very interesting, thanks for starting this post. I just bought a boat and am going to start putting together a tool kit and other must have in the boat items. Might have to start another thread on safety kits.

I know some people carry an extra propeller and shear pin in their tools.

Geez….that link you put up whittsend just reminds me of high school where all the ‘cool’ kids were putting ground effects on their crap civics thinking they were hot stuff.

There is a line where usefulness turns into overkill and ridiculousness, and there’s a couple pictures on the site that cross that line.

I do however do see how some very cleverly places LED lights, possibly with motion or pressure sensors, could help with storage compartments and unloading at the end of the day.

    Great job!

This post is an inspiration to anyone (including myself) who would like to do even the small modifications and upgrades themselves.

Geez, after all this praise over St. Croix and other type of rods…I’m thinking my Canadian Tire special Quantum Reax just isn’t gonna cut it anymore.

That is exactly why I started looking for a boat in March. Luckily I found a nice boat with lots of options for a very reasonable price. I had to drop everything and drive 4-5 hours to get it, but that’s what you gotta do to beat everyone else to it.

I don’t even wanna think of what I’d have paid for the same boat during crazy time.

    Thanks for all the welcomes.
I’m in Northwestern Ontario, near Dryden, living on Wabigoon Lake.

At this point i’m thinking of keeping the HB 570 monochrome on the bow. But getting maybe a 587ci HD DI or the 597 version for the console. Thing I’m wondering about is that they have the same drop in mounts. So if I was to want the GPS and colour on the bow, could I just quick disconnect, move it to where the 570 is? I would assume due to the transducers the DI wouldn’t work. Anyone else try something like this?

Ya, ebay seems to be more people/companies using Buy it now with rarely any deals that I’ve seen. Also I’m in Canada and when you add on the duty on most of the american sellers I lose any saved money.

Any advice on the models I’m looking at?
