The pipe was not cut between the points, we had no way to get flow through the pipe at the time.

I’m sure that was the problem.

I work in the Commercial HVAC trade, I cover around 27 weeks a year of on-call. This year has had some of the strangest calls related to the cold weather.

A few years back we had a 3/4″ copper line freeze solid (pipe actually burst) Hearing about using a welder we gave it a try. We cut the line at both ends so that no stray voltage or amperage would go a place we didn’t want. We had good connections to the pipe, We had extra heavy cables, we had a 250 amp power source.

after 8 hours and 2 burnt up cables the pipe was still frozen. We ended up cutting the insulation off it and using a propane torch to get a “trail” of water down the pipe and get a little flow going. took 15 mins with the torch.

If someone out there has a welder and they use it to thaw pipes, I’d like to see it.. Not saying it cant be done but they obviously use a different method than we did.

It makes you wonder if 8′ is deep enough for water mains.

    fellas, fellas, fellas,

why waste your time OVER the water? Hire a submarine and avoid all the “safety problems”

Once you see fish out the window, you surface, crawl out on the ice and fish away.

We were up mid to late March.

The guide is really well known up there. Maybe he was just having a bad week or something else was going on. I’d rather not say who because in the end he made it right with us and we got our money back.

We went to winnipeg in 2011 without having any knowledge of the lake. We stayed in winnipeg beach and had 3 sleds and 1 atv. sleds are the preffered method of travel up there.

We fished down by chalet beach and had good success catching big fish….but, thats all we caught. over 4 days and 4 guys we only caught 40 fish. 10 of them being 26″+. The weather was bitter cold -20* and windy.

We hired a guide but he cancelled on us due to equipment failures on his part and then asked if he could ride on the backs of our sleds. He also tried charging us for “cancelling” on him.

If we go again we will go with the expectations of catching small numbers of fish, kniowing that when you do catch one its a big one!

    heres a few teaser pics

I bought my fisherman at nelson marine and had great service. Any repairs I need to have done are done at Erickson marine in Hastings. They have always been good to deal with and even when I needed it fixed in a couple days before a big trip they pulled through.

Only reason I didn’t buy it there was because they didn’t have the trailer I wanted.

One thing to remember is that you only pay all that interest if you take the full term to pay off the loan

The problem with the thinking is you pay off the interest to the bank FIRST. over half the payment is to the bank for the first 1/2 of the loan term.

Now, when I turned 21 I wanted a fishing boat I would keep for a while. I bought a brand new boat $30k. I took a 7 year loan out on it and paid it off in 5. would I do it again? NO. Do I regret it? NO.

That boat has brought a lot of great memories and I still have it and don’t plan on selling it for a long time. When I am in the market for a new boat, I will take the financial advice of my Grandma.

“Any large purchase i.e. house, make the expected payments to yourself for a year before you buy it. that will show you can afford it and then you will have that much more for a down payment.”

“car loans, 3 years max. If you cant pay it off in 3 years, you don’t need it. same monthly payments to yourself rule applies”

“toys: save up and pay cash.”

The toys rule is the tough one for me.

I’m not against diesels entirely, they have their place in a work truck. Pulling fishing boats and 1500# worth of sleds is not work.

Heck, my dad has been a diesel mechanic for 40 years and he still wouldn’t buy a diesel truck. What does that say?

I’ve driven ford 1 ton vans past 200k and have done very little work on them. Those were gas motors. My old personal truck had 190k on it before it got taken out by a tree 2 years ago.

I can buy a rebuilt crate motor for my gas v10 for $4000 now. Then I would have a NEW motor, not just injectors.

Guys that have diesels and like them that’s great. When its -20 out and windy would you bet $500 that your diesel will start if its not plugged in? My gas sits all week long, not plugged in and I never have a problem starting it in this cold weather.

With today’s vehicles who has “worn” a truck out? Typically a vehicle wears out in areas other than the engine. Gas engines are just as capable of reaching 200k+ miles with proper maintenance. They won’t need $4000 injectors, double the batteries, added fuel cost, $100 oil changes and cold weather start issues.

Diesel has its purpose and that’s power. Unless you pull 10k pounds all over the country, a comparable gas truck will show more ling term cost savings in the long run.

Towing a couple sleds and gear hardly justifies the added expenses of a diesel.

I assume you have hydraulic surge brakes now?

I have hydraulic surge disc brakes now and I am waiting for them to fail on me so I can change them over to electric. In my opinion electric brakes are the way to go.

If you already have drum brakes and the backers are already installed, you could convert them fairly easily. Just buy the electric backer plates and run the wires to each side. You could even add on the 2nd axle. You can never be too safe, and having more than enough trailer brakes isn’t a bad thing.

Let us know what you come up with.

The city of Hastings still uses their ladder truck that is from 1976. They are finally replacing it and I believe the cost is a cool $1 million.

I have never seen a dirty fire truck

Saugers need to be intact completely. Walleyes just the 1″. If you’re staying at a resort its easier to pay them to clean take home fish. They usually have a packaging license and can completely fillet them.

Don’t waste your money ordering the longer mounts. I extended mine by using a 3/8″ bolt cut to length and 1/2″ PVC pipe cut to make up the difference. All you do is drill a hole in the bolt for the roll pin.

    Funny you mention this:

I had never heard of the place before today. A customer of mine wanted lunch and we ordered enough to feed 13 guys from the rack shack in Burnsville. Very good food and all at a decent price.

Tell me again how much better mileage a diesel truck gets and how they last a million miles……..I will keep driving my gas truck.

The first vehicle I ever drove was the 1966 international scout at the farm. It had no brakes and a slant 4 with a factory plow. 18 years later I bought it from grandma and it will now stay in the family and keep plowing the driveway. I have pictures but can’t upload from my phone for some reason.

I bought a hitch hauler and modified it to haul my shack. When we go to LOTW those long runs on the lake are better not pulling the shack and when I go to load into the truck I just leave everything hooked up.

I’ll second gull rock. Dad and I went there 9 years in a row until life got in the way and we couldn’t make the drive.

We stayed at five lakes lodge and always had a great time.

Every year this subject comes up.

The company had to keep a tech on call so someone answers the phone when it rings. That costs money.

The company has to keep a van stocked and on the road. That costs money.

Go ahead, buy that motor online. When that motor fails in 30 days. Call them back and try to get them to come out and fix it.

You are lucky the guy fixed it and got it right the first time. We (people in the business) deal with customers like this everyday. As soon as they get the bill they complain its too high. If you could get the motor cheaper online why didn’t you? Is it because you didn’t know what
was wrong? That takes experience and that’s what you pay for.

Besides, there is no grease zerks on fan motors. Most are sealed bearings and don’t need anything for the lifetime.

What I meant was that if its the trailer I’m thinking of, you have to load the quad first. Otherwise too much weight is on the rear of the trailer.

That trailer is barely long enough to hold both. You have no choice but to put the quad on first.

Find a used walkin cooler or freezer. The walls lock together by an Allen wrench. The only thing you’ll have to.come up with is a roof and floor
