A police dog from the Forest Lake Police Department died after helping the Minnesota State Patrol and Washington County deputies make an arrest Tuesday night.
The Washington County sheriff’s office said in a news release Wednesday morning that officers made a “high risk vehicle stop” at about 11:30 p.m. near U.S. 61 and Minnesota 97 in Forest Lake.

A person in the vehicle did not comply with police commands and a Forest Lake police dog named Ranger was used to help make the arrest, according to the sheriff’s office.
“Immediately following the incident, K9 Ranger suffered a medical emergency,” the news release said.
Audio from the MN Police Clips website of the incident indicated that the driver in the car being stopped had concealed his face with a bandana, refused police commands and was trying to restart the car and drive away. The audio indicated that a Taser and a police dog was used.
The dog, a 95-pound German Shepherd, was taken to the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center, apparently under cardiac arrest, but attempts to resuscitate it failed, and the dog was pronounced dead.
In a MN Police Clips recording, a dispatcher says, “Final call for police service dog Ranger. End of watch, Wednesday, February 8, at 00:38 hours. Thank you for your seven years of service and may you rest in peace.”
The case is still under investigation.
