There seems to be a lot of talk right now about how the preservative BHA is bad for dogs. It frustrates me that it’s hard to tell which information is reliable. From what I’m hearing, the long-term exposure may lead to tumors and BHA is known to the state of California to cause cancer in lab rats. Well, what ISN’T known to California to cause caner?

I might look into some homemade dog treat recipes just to avoid concerns regarding BHA. Feel free to share if you have any recipes you (or well, I guess your dog) likes!

I do not have homemade recipes, but I feel my GSP Wellness Wellbars and he goes Berserk over them. I get them on Amazon and the listed ingredients are all good, IMO. Whitefish and Sweet Potatoes!

I’ve made a few recipes. I’ll have to look through what I have. The ones that Floyd loved most were vile to make. Pureeing and baking beef liver…yuck.

I will say that his absolute favorite thing in the world was raw beef liver. That, and butter. )

I try not to get too caught up in the claims of supposed experts. There are a lot of wackos out there (don’t get me started on a rant about anti-vaccine people), so knowing what to believe is downright impossible.

Thanks guys! A friend of mine had a sick pup a year or two ago and he was on a chicken and sweet potato diet. We helped them mash up and prepare meals for a month’s worth – that was a lot of work! But I suppose it couldn’t have been as bad as using beef livers… eek

Ahh the things we do for our beloved pets. )

A really good friend of mine was having one heck of time to keep his 5yo GSP healthy. We’ve narrowed it down to chicken that makes her tummy upset…it’s weird! After 4 years of eating nutrisource, she started becoming sick and after feeding her brown rice and boiled chicken, it made her worse. After consulting with his vet, she is now eating Fromm Duck and Sweet Potato and she couldn’t be healthier. She even runs circles around my 50lb GSP, and shes only 35lbs!

I agree, Sharon…It’s crazy what we do for the little boogers! Mine ran his paws raw last weekend at my parents and we put a pair of my socks on his feet for a couple days…he managed to chew one up, now I have an uneven number of socks and a dog with an appetite for more!

This is off the BHA question so pardon me. I very good book to read about dogs is called “Pukkas Promise by Ted Kerosote.(not sure his last name is spelled correct) Some very good info and very interesting. Much info about foods, food companies, vets, and vet schools.
