Think big for Lake Trout

Our last trip to Superior in September found us on the water needing to do some jigging and nothing to jig with. Somehow we neglected to pay any attention to jigs when we were starting to put the tackle together a couple weeks prior to the trip. After a later check we found that we really needed to add some stuff so jigs were right at the top of the needs pile so I have been busy since returning from that jaunty.

The picture with the hook and un-painted head also shows a stinger wire I make to literally tie to the hook prior to the casting. The copper wrap at the bend of the 7/0 Black Chrome Mustad hook is just to help keep the stinger wire oriented in the mold and hook slot for casting and the copper is removed after casting. After painting the heads the #2 Gammi Wide Gap trebles get pinched on and the hair gets added.

The picture with the finished jigs show the four color combos that have been our best producers over the years, with the blue over white being at the top of that list. Measuring at about 5″ from front to the back of the treble, these jigs weigh in at about 3 ounces. As seen compared to a 1/32 crappie head hanging onto a 1.5″ paddletail plastic, these jigs look huge but they are in fact giant killers. We add a strip of cut cisco or a 5″ sucker to the jigs and bump them in water up to 175 feet on fairly stiff rods using 20 braid and a 40 pound fluoro leader of about 10 feet.
