Anyone have opinions and experience with Fins or Frostbite braid? Both claim to be “zero water absorption” hence eliminating freeze up on line. Sounds great, but I am skeptical.

All the “ice braids” are zero absorption until they get wet and wound/unwound a few times… then it’s just braid.
I’ve gone back to old school regular mono for most my ice fishing now. I may still run braid for a hard bait inside the shack or outside for a few minutes when it’s cold. Besides that it’s whatever as long as it’s not too deep Of water or too cold.
Take that for what it’s worth.
Braid don’t freeze cause it’s absorbing water it freezes cuz it’s wet on the outside and instantly freezes in real cold temps. That and the water wicking off the eyelet is typically the problem.
I kind of like chewing ice off my line keeps me hydrated.
Frostbite typically makes good stuff however. If you try a spool let us know how it performs.

you know people and fish pee in that water right?

They do?
As braid gets used the weave will loosen up. While the material itself will not take on water, water can and will capillary between the fibers of the braid and freeze. As mentioned the surfaces will ice too. Once we start seeing freezing temps I stop using braids. I do not ice fish any longer but I do fish open water until ice makes it impossible and braids can become the pits to use.

They arent allowed to anymore the DNR made it against the law last year. All of our water should now be completely free of all species of pee.

So that’s the extra taste that I love. I de-ice my line all the time with my mouth, doesn’t everyone ?

Well there really isn’t any other way, so yeah. Besides it’s not the worst thing Rip has had in his mouth.
Hey now. This is getting a little sidetracked. Let’s get back on topic.
Most of the flat braids would be impervious to water, they are just stretched plastic fibers.
Anyone use and able to share experiences with Fins or Frostbite line?
I havent used those brands but i tried the fall run braid. It worked well for 20-30 casts and then iced up the same as any other braid. Thinner diameter/lighter lb does better
fish pee in that water right?
From the inter webs:
For freshwater fish specifically, they have a high concentration of ions and a low concentration of water inside their bodies compared to the water they live in, so water is constantly diffusing into the fish. Fish kidneys work overtime to get this water back out of their body, meaning freshwater fish pee a lot.
Freshwater fishes have to *get rid* of water constantly to keep their cells from bursting, which means they pee *a lot*. They’re pretty much peeing all the time. If people peed as much as a freshwater fish, they’d release up to 28 liters a day, which is about 20 times more pee than they usually make.
You can pretty quickly run Chapstick over braid and that helps, put some on the top line guide helps too. Just of course do it just for the line you will use which for most is 25′<
