Got one week left of the first year for the “Maple Lake Irish Anglers” youth fishing league. Been fishing Wednesday nights for 8 or so weeks. I don’t fish I just run the boat for my kid and one random member each week. There’s two that don’t drive me nuts that I try an grab to take with me and the boy. So far my kid is tied for first against a graduated senior who is captaining his own boat. That kid is a hell of an angler. No matter how well we do, he seems to do the same or better! We’ve had some action in my boat! Last night the other kid who fished with us landed a 35.5” pike! It’s a multi species league. I’ve never had so much fun in a boat and not even be the one actually fishing! Like a couple weeks ago when I tried to teach them how to fish scum frogs. We must have had a dozen blow ups in the scum. Bass frogs were flying over my head left and right. All I could do was laugh at the their frustration as they tried to hook them. Finally the boy hooked one and almost got it to the boat before it jumped 3 foot out of the water and threw the frog. The boy just sat down in his seat and asked if we could go troll for northerns. Lol. Definitely looking forward to next year already! Between fishing and baseball it’s been a fun summer!

That’s awesome Drifter! I’m thinking of talking to AD at kids high school in Bloomington, hard to believe Jefferson doesn’t have a team

I would like to get my son into something like this. How old do they have to be and how do I sigh up? Great job by the way.

Just found the one for my area. Looks like he needs to be a bit older.

It’s been crazy to see High School fishing to explode the way that it has. I started fishing my sophomore (2020 first covid) year. I started out fishing locally, but then started to travel around the state the following year, while still fishing some local stuff. This year (my senior year) I made it even further around, even making it down to fish the biggest high school tournament in the world on Pickwick Lake in Alabama.

There’s some absolute hammers from all over the state you get to know pretty well, especially when it’s the same guys at the top of the 200+ boat leaderboard every single tournament. There’s kids that could no doubt give even the most seasoned tournament guys a run for their money on any given day.

Once you start to get really competitive, it begins to drain a lot of time and money, no different from serious traveling sports.
