Reaching out here. My daughter was unsuccessful during the youth deer hunt and teared up getting down from our stand in the northern part of the state. Told her I’d try for a spot for us for regular season as I cant afford to rent a cabin again. I live on the west side of Mille Lacs, or a spot near St. Cloud to have a shot at a doe would make our day. Thanks in advance IDO members, have to try.

Man thats super tough. Not sure if you would consider public but you have a ton by you. It is a grind and it takes a lot of work but there might be some smaller areas around you that are super overlooked. Being unsuccessful I think drives you to appreciate when you are successful that much more.

I hunt in the Chippewa National Forest for 2.5 days every season just east of Leech Lake. It’s an enormous piece of land that is open to public hunting. There are some other hunters in there but after opening weekend of gun season the pressure drops big time. Plus it’s big enough where you can have an area to yourself if you are willing to get off the beaten path. The only other hunters I have seen in years are on their ATVs driving on the Soo Line.

Might be worth considering Bob. Grand Rapids is not that far from it.

Do you need to hunt opening weekend or the following weekend or would something during the week work? Just to clarify you live west of ML.

Forgot to update my profile. I no longer live in Grand Rapids. The Chippewa Forest is where we were hunting as that is where all my stands are. I now live on the Mille Lacs. It doesn’t have to be opening weekend however weekdays with school would be tough as she is very concerned about her attendance record. A little different then her dad…

Good young lady especially after everything these kids have gone through the last 18 months. There is a TON of public land just about anywhere you could want to hunt. The further North you go the more there is. Plus, if you are zone 1 you get 3 weekends instead of 2. If you do not have it get the ONX Hunt app on your phone and you can see every parcel of property in MN and who owns it. The other nice thing is it tells you zones, deer limits and season dates. Very nice app and well worth the money. Last year I was sitting with my son and we see 3 deer walking across the clear cut during the youth hunt. THey were a LONG way away and I used the app to plot the distance with current position and satellite overlay on because my son wanted to shoot LOL. 315 yards. Not a chance. I wouldnt even take that shot and he was 11 and never shot over 50 LOL.
