Yeti recalls 1.9 million coolers and cases for magnet hazard

U.S. product regulators said Thursday that Yeti has recalled 1.9 million coolers and gear cases because magnets can come detached from them, posing a risk of serious injury or death.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said consumers should immediately stop using the four recalled products and contact Yeti for refund information.

The closures on the recalled products can fail, resulting in detached magnets, the CPSC said. If swallowed, two or more high-powered magnets can attract to each other or to another metal object and get stuck in the digestive system. The CPSC said if that happens, it can cause perforations, twisting and blockage of the intestines, potentially resulting in infection, blood poisoning and death.

Wait what? So danger! danger! beware of loose magnets because they’re harmful if swallowed!! Duh, why would someone decide to eat the loose magnets just because they came detached?

We used to force feed a special magnet to a cow if they had a piece of hardware they swallowed obstructing their digestive tract.

    kids????????

I guess that’s possible but where do you draw the line? Kids could accidentally choke themselves on the strap or down themselves in a cooler too. This isn’t a product intended for kids, so the warning about the dangers of swallowing magnets seems a bit much here.

These magnets ain’t your Fisher Price magnets(rubber based) they’re rare earth neodymium. I work with ’em and can attest to their hazard. I had a single magnet the size of a dime in my pocket one day and it reached out and grabbed the steel door jam, pinching me and causing a blood blister. Last week I was handling some bigger(1.5″x1.5″x.5″) and they chose to get together…..almost broke my hand. And now I can’t separate them. Each has a pull of several hundred lbs when stuck to steel plate. Combined, they’re over 500lbs.
So yeah, they could easily kill. But only if you’re dumb enough to eat one.

Like the old Lay’s potato chip commercial of the 60’s/70’s, “Betcha can’t eat just one!”

I’ve seen a lot of things with magnets now have pacemaker warnings on them as well.

It’s for toddlers safety. They did this with magnetiles because kids were putting them in their mouths and every once in awhile the little magnets would fall out and they’d swallow them. Then once in their intestines the magnets would attract to each other and pinch off the intestine causing it to die. Then they’d have to cut out that section of intestine and most times those kids would have to have colostomy bags. Nasty stuff really.

I would hope an adult wouldn’t get one into their digestive system though. That would be a certain kind of special.

Where do you draw the line. Most everything is dangerous to a toddler. Do we need child caps on gas cans next? I have three kids so I understand the concern. But I mean come on. At some point this crap is out of hand.

“The closures on the recalled products can fail, resulting in detached magnets, the CPSC said.”

It’s a product defect, and apparently a design flaw, so it needs to be corrected.

    Yeti…

Why people don’t just buy RTIC products for 40% less and receive an equal or superior product is hard to comprehend
