Turned this old Mora hand auger into something more efficient, painted it black and cut out an old truck mud flap for help, the extension got machined out at work with the bit for the drill. Works great, currently using a 996 dewalt, I’ve noticed the shaver blades are taking a hit tho. Sooo thinking on something with chipper blades, just not sure if any replaceables fit a 50 yr old set up. Anywho had my sites set on a k-drill, A fella at work said good luck, they suck on thick ice..?

My k-drill was great. Used it on LOTW with 30” of ice with no issues. Biggest challenge is that chews through batteries. The auger will be fine.

I can almost guarantee k drill blades won’t work on that set up. If the angle and everything don’t line up they will burn up a drill. For less than 200$ I’d just buy the bit.

Not trying to be a dink or anything but why do you guys even mess around with the drill powered augers? Those electric augers get fire saled this time a year and are probably way cheaper than a drill and a bit. That strikemaster 24 volt was like $299

I misunderstood…you want to try and fit other blades onto the old auger?

That isn’t a good idea and it won’t work.

To the other poster…I used a k drill til my drill died. It’s awesome for hole hopping. In “upgraded” to a 24V a few years ago.

I use my drill and lite flight till ice is good for a wheeler, then the 40v comes out. Got it on a fire sale last year. This time of the season i go opposite. 40 v till I’m back to hiking and then the drill comes just for space and weight purposes

Because I already own power tools. Pretty simple. Why would I pay for a power head and battery if I already own one for other uses.

Exactly Rip, building a skid house soon and pretty sure the shaver blades won’t reopen old holes is why I might need a different set up.

I have the strikemaster 40v and have absolutely zero qualms. I’ve replaced blades once and probably didn’t need to. I have one spare battery along with the original and rarely discharge one fully on a trip, even after 20 plus holes thru thick ice(but definitely keep a second with you just in case, maybe even a spare set of blades) I kept the old blades as backups, they may be dull but definitely useable. It’s night and day from the old gas jiffy. Not sure if it’s the best around but it is definitely good and reliable.

    -20° to 30° F. I wonder how well it works at 102° F…

Its pretty rare that I have to drill thru more than 24in of ice and never have an issue with my 6in K-Drill or 8in Lite Flite with my Milwaukee drill for the past 5+ years. The drill I can use year round, no need to by an electric auger to use it for 3months out of the year

I have never had an issue cutting through thick ice with a k drill. I have used it in Winnipeg with zero issues.

shaver blades work great for reopening holes. Kdrills do to but take more torque, but if you have a big drill go for it. Lazers like Strikemaster suck at reopening holes. If you lose that leading edge with a tiny ding you might as well use a butter knife.

The saying use the right tool for the job comes to mind. Drills are not made or meant for drilling holes in ice with a 6 or 8 inch hole. They have a 1/2” chuck for a reason. I get the walking out early ice thing but any more than that and your just being a cheapskate and it’s going to cost you more in the end when you burn up your drill. I have a snowmobile that I could use as an ATV in the summer but why would I? It’s not meant for it and it will wreck it.

I was about to say the same thing bigstorm. So on my original post the dude at work burnt up 2 M18 drills, maybe they aren’t cut out for it? So it definitely left a bad taste as far as a drill set up for him. Anywho thanks for the responses, I guess I’m used to a jiffy chewing thru whatever and never had the blades changed or sharpened. Was hoping something with chipper blades doing the same..maybe I’m just over thinking this.

The average person is an idiot. 50 percent of people are dumber than that. Your coworker falls into the second category. I’ve been using the same drill and batteries for 7 years

So because he burned up 2 drills and you’ve had yours longer, that makes him have a lower than average IQ? Real intelligent post. By the way it’s probably time for you to get a new set up. Technology has come a long ways since you bought your old garbage.

If you don’t clear the hole of ice shavings in thick ice you will destroy your drill eventually. He didn’t figure it out on the first drill or the second. So?

I’m just another guy with a Milwaukee fuel drill that is about to be junk and I only have a 7″Lazer bit on it. I’m not impressed with Milwaukee, never have been. I’m guessing there’ll be a few more Milwaukees burning up in the near future.

I always hated Milwaukee chucks when I had to use them at work. Makes me wonder if they are drilling to many holes and overheating them or maybe getting moisture in them causing something to short out. I had a 7 1/2″ Kdrill and used it once and sold it. Way too much torque for my liking. My 6″ Nils could be used one handed with no problem.

To each their own bud. I ice fish all over MN and parts of Canada. Drill still going strong after 10 years of the same combo.

I guess all these companies making bits for drills are idiots then.
K Drill was specifically built for a hammer drill. Andy every company has now done the same.

I’ve been using a Milwaukee with Clam plate and 8″ Laser combo all year, every year for 8 years now. I bolted it on day one and leave it there all year. The chuck has never loosened and the trigger works perfect. One set of new blades and maybe I’ll sharpen them for next year. I guess put me in the IDIOT/CHEAPSKATE category…. coffee
I drill more holes than most people I know every time out until I land on fish. This combo outperforms any gas auger I’ve ever had and is better, faster, and lasts longer per battery than either of the Strike masters currently available. Yes, I use them when fishing with friends. If I had to get a new auger tomorrow, I’d get the same setup I currently have. To each their own. I don’t consider anyone using a drill, SM, Eskimo, Ion, Swedish spoon, Earthquake, gas, propane, solar, or hand chisel an idiot…… peace

That’s far from the truth. I’d say they are geniuses! Like they care what you do to your stuff? They just want to reap the benefits of tightwads.
