Yamaha T8 – one cylinder not firing

I installed new spark plugs over the Winter and in my first two trips of the Spring it has been running rough. Today, I decided to remove the plugs and one is clean and the other looks super fouled with soot. Any ideas what could cause one not to fire properly?

Could be a bad plug but unlikely. Check to see if you have spark out of both wires leading to each plug. Also compression test each cylinder.

Sure you didn’t bump the electrode and close the gap? Check to be sure the gap is right.

Could be time for a valve adjustment. Generally valves will tighten over time, but sometimes the exhaust valves can loosen and cause a miss from low compression.

    Work backward from the plug.

Get a spark checker and check that you have spark and that the plug wire is good. A spark checker is less than $10 and it’s a super tool to have around.

Then check the plug itself. Check the gap is set and make sure the plug itself is sparking.

If you have spark and a good plug, it’s probably time to seek professional help.

If this was working ok when you stored last fall, I’d guess it’s a clogged fuel jet in the carb. Very common problem on the T8 after sitting.

I put in a plug that I had on hand from the last plug change and the motor started right up and seemed to run okay. Only a little time on the water will determine if it will soot up again. Shops are already slammed here so it will be a few weeks before I can get it into a shop for a thorough check of valves. I appreciate the responses. Praying that the ghost is gone with the fouled plug.

Maybe a carbon clean is in order. Make sure to install new plugs after.

The more motors I clean out with this the more I’m a believer!

Saw that in Walmart the other day. Is it an additive or a throat spray?

    Spray.

Used it lately on a go-kart out at my mom’s house which may be neglected a bit, thing was screaming after.

lol,I sent him a pm,there are a lot of things that yammie is noted for when it comes to fouled plugs and or misfires.
the things I suggested take a bit of time to check out one by one.
to some it would seem like a shotgun approach to the diagnostics of it so I sent him a check list.

My guess would be a bad plug from the get go. Had it happen to my Opti 3 bad plugs in a row…go figure luckily the shop had replaced them and they covered them and all the checking to find the problem.
