So its time to change the oil and lower unit grease (oil). The dealer where I have always gotten these items has retired and locked the doors. The closest dealer is in Clear Lake IA. Which is not all that far. But still need 1/2 day to get there and back. Question 1 have any of you gotten your oil and filters from Amozon? Or does it really matter if its Yamha oil or some other brand.

I would say go OEM, the difference in cost is minimal.

It doesn’t matter. OEM branded oil is a huge ripoff. As long as the oil is of the appropriate viscosity, it will be more than good enough. It’d be ridiculous to run around the country chasing what you can buy locally with only a different sticker on the bottle.

Obviously, Yamaha doesn’t make the oil and they don’t set standards for oil in general. So there’s nothing special about it that cannot be had off the shelf with any other API certified oil.

Run a good full synthetic like Mobile 1. I’ve been using Mobile 1 in everything from my cars/trucks to my lawnmowers and other small engines since the late 1980s. Flawless protection, excellent longevity.

Yeah, It is hard to find the part numbers but with some searching, I found the OEM denso filter and the part number of a Wix filter and they’re kind of expensive, like $10 ea. The real trick would be getting the little washers that seal the screws for the oil drain and the lower unit.

I just ordered my oil change kit through amazon. It got to the house in about a week and I paid the same price as I did at the dealer. I also got free shipping. Now I just have to get busy and get it done.

Thanks guys I found a chart for Fram filters . They say they have one to fit Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda and others. They are all the same number.FF have them for around 9 bucks. I have used Fram in my cars with no problems. So would it be safe to use in outboard? If it filters oil in ATV s should be good for a boat?????
