Yamaha kicker electrical issue

I was just cleaning and drying the boat in my garage after a trip to Lake Superior yesterday and all of a sudden I heard a sizzling sound and smoke started pouring out of my kicker motor. I quickly disconnected the power to it but can’t find any melted wires. It was in the rain on the highway on my way home. The fuse looks good so apparently that doesn’t provide any safety.

I just connected the power back to it and it fired up like nothing is wrong? I’m a little concerned about leaving it on my boat and it burning down my garage with the boat in it.

Look at the voltage regulator and see if it is cooked.
The regulator is not fused is why the fuse is not blown.

Thanks I’ll have figure out where that is. Would it start and run if the regulator is cooked?

yes it will start and run if it hasnt taken out the stator with it.
if you find the regulator is blown you have an incorrect or bad battery.
follow the two heavier wires from the stator to the regulator.

It looks fine, but not sure what to look for.

take it off and look at the back side of it, if it is cooked the sealing gel will be melted.
something caused a dead short, I would not rest until I found it, do not leave it hooked up to the battery until the problem is found.

what are the two black wires hooked to the positive post??
ground wires hooked up by mistake?? or what you had to use?

I am going to add to this post regardless of what Gino finds wrong.
A kickers charging system is not designed to charge batteries that have a lot of load on them.
At best the kickers charging system puts out ten amps and if the battery is down on volts its too much of a load for it to recharge and it will without a doubt fry it sooner or later.

If the same battery is used to start the main motor it needs to be ran for a while to help recharge the battery.

So it looks fine, one thing to add is I haven’t used this kicker in over a month. Never even started it yesterday when I was fishing. It just was there if I needed it . Sometimes I just use the big motor like yesterday. The two black wires are the power wires to my graphs . It was just the wire I used at the time. They are correctly hooked up

Hook a voltmeter to the battery and start the kicker and see if it is charging correctly.
if it is showing a charge, set your voltmeter to the AC setting ( only do this if you have a good voltmeter ) do you see a charge of .200 volts or more??
if so the rectifier is bad.

I wont tell the folks what you had in the hood that you told me about, I will leave that up to you lol.

Lol, sounds good thanks for the advice! I’ll reply when I do some diagnostics to it . It’s no secret I installed some sound proofing to it , I did a post about it. My big motor has this material in the cowling from the factory. Not saying I should or should not have done it but we will see! jester
