Yamaha 175 Tilt/Trim

Last fall before I put the boat away the trim was making some pretty loud noises when trimming down. I was hoping it fixed itself but it hasn’t.

Fast forward to today and as I’m looking at it, it seems a seal is leaking a little. When I trim down, it almost sounds like it’s binding.

Is this as simple as removing the snap rings and replacing a seal? If that’s it, I’ll gladly take on the challenge. If it’s more, I’m going to take it in before the dealers get crazy. I’m also wondering about warranty. This is 5 years old in May. The Yamaha warranty is 6 or 7 years but I don’t know if this component would be covered under the engine warranty?

Any suggestions from the IDO brain trust?

There is YouTube videos on how to do this. I rebuilt one years ago that was also leaking.

My 150 likes to settle a little when it sits. Had it in several times and had some seals replaced but it didn’t fix the settling. Then as I was getting it ready for storage I noticed a trim seal was leaking again. The work was done under warranty but mine just expired last fall so I hope the dealer will warranty their work as the seals should last longer than a year.

The noise you’re probably hearing is an easy fix.

Try putting a dab of grease on these.

It’s a metal-on-metal contact and sounds like hell when there’s no lubrication.

You can also put a dab in the pockets where they hit under the powerhead.

It’s also common from my experience to see the seals leaking a tiny bit in cold weather, your problem may or may not go away when it’s warmer out.

Trim seals are pretty easy to fix.

Tilt seals on the other hand……

It’s sitting in a heated garage. I did lube those up last fall.

I just called The Boat Center…it’s likely covered under warranty. I’ll probably run it over there. They said 2-3 hours plus parts which seems fair if it’s not warranty work.

I did an o ring on my tilt cylinder last summer, 200 Yamaha. It wasn’t to bad at all. The hardest thing was trying to find a wrench for the cap. After having zero luck finding one I used a hammer and a Phillips screwdriver and it worked surprisingly well. If you decide to take a crack at it yourself you’re better off going online to one of the stores that has the exploded view where you can just click on the parts you need than ordering from a shop. I’m not sure how things are where your at but any marina/dealership I’ve ever dealt with up here has people that are 100% incompetent. Everything from ordering parts or doing repairs. I still have a handful of the wrong seals they ordered for me.

I did the trim cylinders on a 150 and it was pretty dang easy. I have the MTI wrench for it if you want to borrow it if its the same . Its a different size than the big tilt cylinder though.

Grease on the rams will fix the cracking binding popping noise.
