Xi5 issue

I have about 10 hours on my new Motorguide Xi5 and I had an issue this weekend. It was in anchor mode in pretty rough water when all of a sudden it ramped up to full throttle for about 10 seconds then all indicator lights went off, then the battery light blinked red 3 times. I have run it in anchor mode several times without issue before.

I checked the batteries and had 24 volts still, the plug in the boat had 24 volts, but the plug on the motor was melted, see picture. I cut the plug off and just held the + and – lead to the appropriate battery terminals and the wire sparked and smoked. Any idea what I am in for?

a warranty claim battle…. and more happy hours on the dock.

Wish I could tell you more but I am not sure. My xi5 has gone kuku twice in anchor mode and then hit 100% throttle. Luckily both times I was paying attention, no one was around, and I was able to turn prop off a few seconds after it kicked up.

Not sure if that can be fixed with an update or not…

My guess is that one of the wires was loose and fried the plug from the inside.

The update did nothing for mine as far as the anchor mode going rogue. It did seem to help smooth out the heading lock. Earlier this year I tried to let the anchor figure it’s self out but after probably 30 seconds of wide open in all directions I shut it down. I’ve pretty much given up on using anchor if I’m standing and casting from the front. It’s not worth the risk of getting tossed over.

I can’t tell if that is a Marinco 4-wire plug, but if so, they’ve recently changed the design to allow for a 60-amp rating, the previous version had an internal jumper that was not quite up to the task.

If it doesn’t say 60-amp on it, it’s the old version.

It’s the original plug that came with my 2005 Warrior. I have had it hooked up to a 24 volt Minn Kota for 10 plus years without issue.

The plug going bad I seriously doubt is the issue. Doesn’t explain when I touch the lead to the battery(no plug involved) why I get spark and smoke coming from the lead wire.

I’m guessing its shorted in the motor.

Motorguide from what I hear has awesome customer service, They’ll have you up and running in no time.

We run the Xi5 and anchor mode is awesome. We have been lucky to not have any issues with it yet. A lot of guys out there run this thing without issues. If you’re having issues don’t hesitate to call MotorGuide.

I got the call Friday, that the motor works perfectly at the dealer. They say it was most likely the plug. I am picking it up today and getting a new plug.

Question, if I change from the 40 amp plug to the 60 amp will I need to also upgrade my factory wiring? I would hate to make the plug stronger than the wiring and cause a fire shock
