XD50 in my Mercury 90 ELPTO?

So I am getting a new to me boat that has a mercury 90 elpto on it. My previous boat had an evinrude that I ran XD50 with and had great results. I have about 3 gallons of the stuff and I trust it. I’m assuming there should be no problem running it in the mercury right? Or should I use quicksilver premium plus?

I would use the XD50,but try not to mix the different brands of oil.

I agree, try to run the mercury oil as low as you dare and then add the BRP oil.

I would not even think twice about using it.

They’re both modern oils engineered to meet the same industry TC-W3 specifications for 2 stroke engines. As Ralph says, I wouldn’t think twice about it, much less worry about it.

If there were any hard evidence of “oil incompatibility” we’d all have known about it long ago and the manufacturer of that engine would have fixed the problem because their engine certifications from boating industry bodies would certainly have been in jeopardy if they couldn’t be run on TC-W3 certified oils.

By the same token, I’ve never seen any evidence of the theory that mixing 2 brands of oil is somehow the cause of issues. Lots of internet armchair theories and stories of brother-in-laws with two first names who wrecked their 1980s bass boat engine by allegedly doing this, but no scientific evidence.

Mixing of standard oils, yes. Mixing of synthetic and non I was told could be troublesome BC the 2 don’t mix well. My 2 cents.

Thanks for the replies. I will use the oil up to a level that I am comfortable with and drain the rest out. I was really happy with the XD50 in my evinrude so I hope it is as good in this motor.

I ran a jug or two of XD50 through a Merc 60 ELHPTO that I used to have, and it worked just fine. I then ran Amsoil for a while till I got sick of the price, so I switched to Pennzoil Marine XLF Synthetic Blend and ran that happily till I sold the boat.

3 auto mechanics and one Marine mechanic. How you get a mixed synthetic blend idk, but seems reasonable enough to me to do your best not to mix.

Bah! I’ve done it. If in doubt, pour a little of each into the same container and look for incompatibility.

The incompatibility is probably only seen at a microscopic level. I would run it low and add the new oil from there, I wouldn’t worry.

I don’t believe it’s an issue, but if it makes you feel better, by all means, do it.
