I’ve been looking for a while now for a youth 20 gauge pump for my kids and Christmas is fast approaching so I figure I would put out feelers on IDO to see if anyone has a used but not abused 870 express 20 gauge youth shot gun or a mossberg 500 bantam 20 gauge or even possibly a nova youth pump that they would be willing to part with. I’m in south metro of the twin cities so something within an hour drive would be great unless there is a great fishing spot on the way! Let me know what you might have. Thank you!

Grandpa got me a 20ga break action single shot when I was 11. Best gun I ever owned!!!!! Good luck!

I’ll reach out to Cabin Fever today to see if they still have any, the last couple of shops haven’t seen any for a while. Thank you for the suggestion.

I bought a youth model Winchester 20 gauge there a little while back. They had more of them and a few more expensive models as well. They at the time did not have an 870. But shortly after that I did get a new 870 12 gauge slug gun so maybe they do now.

I would not consider the Mossburg bantam. I bought one some 15 years ago or so. It is the only gun that I have traded in or sold in the past 20 years. Craftmanship poor and tolernaces poor.

I would look at the Remington 870. If you want another gun choice or they shoot left handed may want to look at the Browning BPS micro 20. About $200 more.

I just bought my daughter the Savage Youth Model 320 from sportsman guide, they ship it to a local FFL. I have not picked it up yet but the reviews seem decent and the price was not very high. time will tell

I was able to talk to the guys at Cabin Fever, good guys there, they only have the youth Winchester SXP for a pump gun. When my oldest 11 year old shoulder it at a different place, he could not reach the front safety without moving his hand completely up on the grip. I would like a rear trigger guard safety.
I would agree that the mossberg just doesn’t feel as good as my 870express, I just need to have Remington start the youth model up again and hope it is good quality. I held the savage 320, I would like a little nicer of a gun to pass down. The Browning BPS mirco looks nice, not sure the kids can have a nicer gun then me! I’ll continue to look for a used youth 870, otherwise going the Browning route might be an option. Thank you

If any of your children are left handed the Browning BPS is the way to go. Thumb safety and bottom eject. I have one and love it for grouse hunting. Light, and fast pointing in heavy cover. I also own a Remington 870 Youth and that is also a great gun for the money

All of the kids are righties so I got lucky there. I have called around on the Browning BPS Micro and those seem to been non-existent also. Thank you for the suggestions, I’ll keep my ear to the ground.

If cost isn’t a big issue, I’d do the BPS. I’ve owned a dozen 870s over the years. The newer models don’t show me any more than the cheaper guns with respect to quality. Have always gave the stink-eye to Mossberg. Only owning a slugster over the years. But just bought a 410 pump from a buddy the had a NIB one. I tore it down, cleaned and lubed it up with some good lubricant. Not that bad. Don’t know I’ve ever known anyone to wear one out.

You could call Boones Fine Guns in Isle. I have a buddy that frequents that place and he says they are very rarely out of anything. 320-676-3030.

I’ve reached out to the various retail suggestions and have only come up with semi-autos in youth 20 gauge. The hunt continues and I think I’ll stick to the 870 youth flavor.

I bought a savage 20 gauge overunder for my daughter to duck hunt when she was 12. Just cut off a little over an inch to shorten it up. She also used it turkey hunting. She was a lefty and worked well for her. Just another option if not using for deer. They had good rebates that made it pretty cost effective. Son will use it when old enough.

Also less kick because of the extra weight of having two barrels

MSRP on a CZ Bobwhite 20 gauge is $675. Gunbroker shows a slew of them starting at $495.

I was hoping to have the kids use the shotgun for slug duty as well during the youth deer firearms season until they are big enough to use the muzzleloaders. So I’m thinking a pump would still be best for a 50 yard slug gun to. Still on the hunt and its okay if it goes into spring. Just drop me a line if you are thinking of letting a 870 youth go. Thank you.

I was looking at buying a youth 870 20ga years ago and ended up buying an adult 12ga, I had it cut down, put a better recoil pad on it and loaded reduced loads for it.

I bought my two boys new generation 870’s. One right handed, one left handed. Luckily both are bigger kids, my 13 Y.O. Is 6’. So no youth sized. For Xmas they are getting slug barrels from Hastings. Remington since they went back in business haven’t started making slug barrels yet. By the time I put scopes on them I’ll have about a grand apiece into them! A far cry from the $400 express combos in the 90’s!

Just looked. It seams they are now building them! Of course if I would have waited. Either way I would have had to order the left handed from Hastings.

Fully rifled with scope mount. I wanted a Hastings barrel for it but seemed pointless after it came this way. No sights. Cabin Fever had 3 or 4 barrels in stock when i bought the gun in October. Barrel is 2 inches longer then my other 870 with hastings barrel.
