Congrats to your son! I think wrestling is one of those sports that is harder on the parents than it is on the kids. I once had to “Shhhhh” my mom in the middle of a match in high school. She told me how embarrassing it was for HER, oh mom.
December 18, 2017 at 6:44 pm #1736636Followed Gophers for some time, although with Penn State these days, it is hard to imagine anyone taking them out, much like when Gable still coached at Iowa. Penn State is just loaded at about every weight but heavyweight.
December 19, 2017 at 9:44 am #1736747I officiate in ND, mainly to stay up to date with the sport. Nothing better out there for kids. Looking forward to the Bismarck Rotary where wrestlers from four different states will compete against each other. Talk about some great competition.

Those years Wrestling in High School were some of the best Years of my life. I have not really followed the sport much for many years. Was just thinking last night while at my daughters Choir concert that I should go catch one of the local High School matches one of these days. Its a Great sport for Kids, Other than the injuries and weight cutting.

I fully agree. Weight cutting seems to be a lot better now. And while it sounds bad to force yourself to cut weight, it teaches you one helluva lesson in self responsibility, accountability, and motivation.
The Gophers have gotten some excellent recruits to sign on with them. They should be able to compete for the team championship in a couple years. Gable Steveson will have a solid chance as being a 4x national champion, he’s so good, and should be fun to watch in college.

I sure hope it’s better. I remember the guys at my school walking laps around the cafeteria in garbage bags while the rest of us ate like normal people.
I wrestled in elementary school and enjoyed it at that level.
December 19, 2017 at 4:38 pm #1736875I went from 142 to 125 in 2 days and started at about 7-8% body fat. I wouldn’t recommend that anyone does that!
December 19, 2017 at 5:13 pm #1736885or watching some guy spit in the garbage can, tryin to lose .2 lbs before the re-weigh… (this after his valiant effort trying to take a dump)
December 19, 2017 at 8:45 pm #1736919Seems the weight cutting has changed quite a bit since the days of sweat suits in saunas in the 80s.
Some of the best guys on our team when I was in highschool early 2000s never cut but wrestled year round.Coolest part for the little guy was seeing how confident he was in practice this week after winning one. Hopefully he continues to like it.

And the herpes… MN’s whole program was shut down ten years ago.
December 20, 2017 at 12:37 pm #1737042Weight loss decent plans are so much better in today’s wrestling. And the kids are better off for it. I cut hard every year I wrestled mainly because I’d lift all summer in preparation for football. Going to 200 to 160 left a lot, mainly food, to be desired. Kid’s simply can’t do that now days. And as a ref, I’m keen as to what to look for. No ones wrists and ankles sweat more than the rest of the body.
Regardless of injuries, many of which I incurred, the dedication to something so taxing on your mind and body has helped me more than most high school and college classes. Congrats to the OP on your son’s win. I always tell kids that losses are not to be afraid of. I’ll take the kid with a loss over the undefeated wrestler any day of the week. Competing with something to lose vs. something to gain. That mentality goes a long ways.
December 20, 2017 at 12:51 pm #1737045Always enjoy catching a BIG1) match on BTN… can’t help but be fascinated by the effort, discipline and sacrifice that is required for this sport…. Go Gophers. Hope they are reloading with new talent.

Totally agree. I wasn’t the best wrestler by any means, but I lost a match by decision to the defending state champion, even took him down and got a reversal on him, and that loss boosted my confidence a ton and changed the rest of my season, narrowly missing the state tournament.

Funny, one of my most memorable matches was a loss too. I went against Dennis Hall from WI at a regional national in Madison and got my butt whooped but scored some points and held it to a major decision. He went on to be a World Champion and Olympic medalist.
