WOW…. what a blow

Ma and I walked into the mall to walk with a few light flurries floating around. Not a lot of wind and 39 degrees. Our walk took 40 minutes. When we came out to go to the car the patches of patches of blue sky were showing, flurries were gone and the wind…. well, lets just say it was something else. Howling out of the west-northwest.

On the trip home we saw a couple empty garbage containers scooting down or across streets. Empty cardboard boxes, t-shirt bags and, of course, leaves were riding the wind. When today’s wind advisory was issued last night I thought “ya, right”. They weren’t kidding. What clouds there are left here are moving right along. And the temp is dropping at a nice clip too.

Our deck furniture is fairly heavy and the wind has never moved it, even during bad thunderstorms. But the force and direction were just right today. It slid our two chairs and sectional right across the deck up against the railing. Hopefully the ice that’s been made so far can withstand the pressure, but I bet a lot of lakes open up again, in spots.

The wife left me a text message earlier this morning asking: “Will the Christmas lights blow off the house with this wind out here?”

My response of “Hopefully.” wasn’t well received.

Of course here I am needing 4 pieces of plywood cut and I can only do that outside or I’ll cover everything in the shop with dust. The good news is that I didn’t have to sweep the sawdust off the driveway. It’s in Wisconsin now.

Random question, Will the wind help the lakes to cool down and freeze quicker when things quite down?

Yep its crazy windy out there today. Like said it may hurt some of the formed ice. Hopefully enough that it doesn’t matter. I would not want to be in a tree stand out there today.

Everyones phones went off like an Amber alert at work, it was a snow squall warning. Never seen that before but a half hour later it went completely white with 40 mile an hour winds for about 20 minutes. Now its pretty clear still just normal wind at 20+. Theres christmas decorations everywhere, and the power and internet was out for awhile. This is on the edge of the Red River Valley though so the only new thing is that normal winter activity is now called a snow squall by the national weather service.

The temp has dropped 20 degrees since I got to work this morning. Wow is it a rude awakening out there with the wind.

In theory, yes and no. If it blows enough to stabilize the water column and the ambient temps are blow freezing, yes it helps.

In some cases, if it blows too much, you can get some roll over with warmer bottom water rising up and slow the process

Lakes that had ice but open spots probably no longer have ice. If they do its under water right now.

Worked between Alexandria and Carlos today until 2pm. Yes, on a roof. If you want to question my sanity, get in line! jester

Drove between Carlos and Le Homme Dieu and Carlos is wide open with giant whitecaps. LHD is still iced over. For now.

Actually sounds like most if not all closed their access today. Not sure how you would even get a portable set up today.

Did the plywood end up in Wisconsin too? Hope you didn’t have a kid holding it for you! rotflol

[/quote] i would question even with the lake ice covered if this wind would stir up the water enough to make it dirty/cloudy??????

Tough weather to have a cold. Painful to go outside.
