Worse than a storm school closure.

Right around the corner is school closings from the virus threat. The situation will be worse then when they close schools for snow storms. All those parents losing their free daycare.

If someone would let me know when the sky starts falling I’d appreciate it…….Sorry Dutch but this whole thing is being blown out of proportion so badly. Unless you’re an 80 year old diabetic with pre-existing lung conditions you will be fine, even if you contract the virus…..

But please, keep buying out stores of their toilet paper. It’s quite humorous….

2 cases in MN, both traced to out of state, known infection sources.

And we’re supposed to be worrying about schools closing?

All this panicking is hard work. I’m heading for the beach bar to slake my thirst.

Im a little concerned with my daughters at college. See they are colleges on the east coast closed already. Wife and I are set with toilet paper but going to be short if the kids come home. Guess we could go from 3 squares a wipe to two.

Funny, but wrong kind of basement saving……I’m actually a part time firefighter who also works full time at the U of M hospital and have gone through all of the newly required coronavirus training…..just for reference.

FYI: Basement saver is a common nickname for a firefighter.

I’m thinking I may need to self quarantine in a boat with a few dozen minnows this spring.

I just saw this headline but when I read further it was 6 lawmakers that were exposed to the virus.

6 lawmakers, several congressional staffers exposed to coronavirus

Kinda have to agree with Mahto on this one. Although I’m no expert. I wonder what the next hyped story will be a few months from now?

Regardless of what it is, it won’t have the power to shut down entire first world counties and put the financial markets in total ruin.

What’s even more funny as I’m also a volunteer firefighter and work at a hospital in Minneapolis…but I’ve never heard that term before but it’s probably because we typically save houses in our city…I kid I kid.

Italy? A first world country and 12th largest GDP on the verge of shut down?

US stock market halted trading this morning due to panic selling? Down darn near 20% in about a week?

Sure seems like it might be already happening?

I won’t argue that it’s having a severe effect on markets and society in general. That is clear. But, I would argue that it has more to do with hype and misinformation than the facts of the virus themselves. There was a very good op-Ed in the NYT a week or so ago that explained the numbers in detail and showed how the numbers for mortality and infection rates are likely overblown because the sample size is so small. For example, they have a pretty good idea how many people have died from it, but have no clue how many are infected and show little or no symptoms. Wish I could link the piece, but I’m struggling to do so on my phone.

Joe, if they know how many have died but not how many were infected, wouldn’t it stand to reason deaths were also credited to something other than the virus but in fact were virus related?

Not looking to start a fight. I just think numbers are being tossed around like they are facts when I don’t think ANYBODY world wide knows. Do we think China, North Korea, Soviet Union for example are giving accurate numbers? Has the little fat guy in North Korea ever told the truth? Ever?

The numbers are facts. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

COVID 19 does have a pretty high rate of mild symptoms to completely asymptomatic. So death rates are inevitably overstated. A inevitable limitation of epidemiology. There’s differences in how countries are confirming new cases which is resulting significantly different death rates. China itself changed the way they test and confirm cases which resulted in a tenfold spike of cases in one to two days.

If you want to blame the hype you need to look at social media. The mainstream media is doing a good job of explaining things in excellent detail for those that are willing to look beyond the headline. Hand sanitizer and TP shortages are happening because idiots are posting pictures of themselves buying massive quantities and then taking pictures of empty store shelves.

Dang it Dutch! Why did I let myself get dragged into one of these threads. Lol. I agree there is a lot of unknowns and nobody really knows how this is going to shake out. I’m mainly basing my opinion on past experience when it comes to what is the next thing we have to panic about. I do respect others rights to their opinion. Over and out.

Just to build on this a little more. When you think of how social media works, its all about views, shared and likes. It’s human nature to be overly dramatic on social media so you can get those shares and likes for self gratification. It’s understandable how this spirals out of control into panic.

And your point is? Reports are the commander in chief has been exposed. They get it it from him? We maybe be able to have a stand in for the hair but the rest is gonna be tough.
