Ive seen bags of wood chips sold in stores but where do you buy your wood chunks for smoking? i prefer to use the chunks but what i have gotten in the past has been just from friends who have given it to me. Are you able to buy chunk wood for smoking in stores locally?

Menards also has smoking wood in their grill sales area.

This reminds me, I have a box full of 6″ diameter apple cut into 4″ long pieces that I need to split into smoking sized stuff.

I generally cut a nice maple at the cabin every three or four years but didn’t get to it this year. I’ll drop a nice 8″ next spring. I’ll let you know when I get it home crappie and we’ll get you a two foot length of this. Hard maple makes a wonderful smoke for red meat and pork and coupled with apple does great things to fish.

Home Depot if I want something standard like hickory. If I’m looking for something more rare or want to support a family owned business: http://www.quetopiabbq.com

The owner Tony is a really nice guy. Plus it’s just fun to walk about and see what he’s got in the store. worth your time to have a look!

that sounds great tom! my electric smoker went out on me and rather than get a new one ive been doing more smoking on my weber charcoal. turns out i like the process a lot and ive really enjoyed the meat ive prepared on the weber. Ive found wood chunks work a lot better than the chips.

I think I fixed the link but that’s the same place I’ve referenced in years past.

When using your weber, crappie, wrap two or three chunks of wood in heavy-duty foil, then re-wrap it in another layer. Set the “bombs”, as I call them, right on the coals. They’ll provide great smoke without the flare-ups you’ll get when using chunks directly on the coals, soaked or not. Don’t throw those bombs out either. When they cool off, unwrap them and you’ll find the best charcoal you’ll ever use inside….double duty for you buck.

crappie if you were on the east side I would give you some cherry wood.
I just got done hauling parts of huge cherry tree that was cut down 2 years ago to get milled down and we still have a whole bunch of logs for burning and smoking that I need to split up. Tree was easy 5 ft diamitor

I have some apple wood laying around, but you would have to cut it up and split it.

Thanks for the offer. If I was in that area I would certainly take you up on that

Is it a whole felled tree or is it in large chunks? I’m not far from where you are. If it’s in manageable sizes at the moment I could swing by and chuck them in the trailer until I have a chance to split it.

And I had a perfect 5ft diameter 4ft tall section for you. I was going to make it into a butcher block but it won’t fit through the door and it takes 2 guys to move it. You could chip away on that thing for years.
I guess it be a nice table next to the smoker for me.

Beef short ribs for anyone wants to help put into place. Hams also.

I get blocks of cherry spit into small pieces and then take a looper and cut pieces into 1.5″ length that fit into my smoke generator, 1 block is about $12-$15 dollars worth of store bought bag chunks

If you can find them try some of the Jack Dan. whiskey oak barrel chips leaves a very good flavor in the meat. I bought a bag at Wal Mart but have not seen any in the stores since

I have a mess of cherry that’s been kiln-dried and planed to about 11/16″ thickness and used in manufacturing. I cut this up into 3″ lengths and split it down to 3/4″ widths and do the foil thing with it too. Apple/cherry is a great fish smoke and works very well on pork as well.
