I am trying to plan a short-notice week at a lake August 8-15. I’ve always wanted to try this lake and am wondering what to expect at that time of year. There are a few openings at a couple different resorts that week, but I wanted to hear some opinions before booking. I understand the second week of August isn’t prime for anywhere in the state, but for those that know the lake…are fish (walleyes) still to be had? I’ve been told it’s a very clear lake with a strong night bite? Any other species that should be targeted? Area attractions? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My grandparents have retired and live in their trailer on Women Lake from May-October every year. I have spent many weekends my entire life on Woman Lake, and now that I live in the state, I frequent it even more often. Yes, Walleyes can still be caught in August. In fact, one of my trips there in early-mid August last year was probably the best I’ve had in the last few years.
It is definitely a night bite lake for walleye, there are some sand bars in front of the island that we troll with shad-raps (SR-5) at night and always produce a few nice walleye, but never limits full. Depending on the time of the year, we may also lindy rig or jig. But generally trolling shad-raps in about 8-9′ of water, I would like to expand on our fishing arsenal though!
There is a very strong and healthy Northern population in the lake. There is a slot from 24-36″ and most fish are caught within that slot, however I catch quite a few nice thick fish in the 22-23″ range that I keep to eat. I can only recall one fish caught that was over the slot.
During the day, if you stay active, you will be able to find some large schools of perch outside of wide edges with a small hair jig and minnow. There are a lot of perch in the lake and can be very fun to catch once you get into the numbers game with them.
Bluegills and crappie can also be had if you can find them. There’s an okay population of largemouth as well, something fun to target early morning.
I’m not a Musky fisherman, but I know people Musky fish that lake as well. I occasionally see them surfacing. Nearby Mule Lake has a strong Musky population from what I’ve been told.
Yes, the water is clear. Seems to vary every year but I would say on a year like this with not much rain, you’ll be able to see about 8-12′ down.
It is a special lake to me as it’s where I grew up learning how to fish with Grandpa. Has a very nice variety of fish, but I would say do not expect a limit of walleye every night. We’ve come to accept that 3-5 in the livewell for a few hrs each night is successful. There are a few different resorts on the lake, Evergreen Lodge is the only one I’ve ever stayed at. Has everything you need for an up north vacation. Decent price, boat launch, and pool to keep your boat protected in. Cabins have just enough to get by, beds, couches, tables, microwave, fridge, stove, bathroom/shower, etc. No TV or wifi or anything like that. Pretty nice sand beach as well.
I’ll be making my first trip of the year to Woman Lake May 28-31 and expect to go there about every other weekend for most of the summer. PM once it gets closer and I can give you a decent report. My grandpa lives the life up there as a retired guy, and fishes just about every day. Just like any lake, I’ve had days where I’ve absolutely hammered the fish, and other days where you couldn’t even buy a bite.
Other area attractions, nearby Walker if you’d like to spend a day shopping. You can boat into Longville through the Woman Lake chain, good ice cream shop called Frosty’s. In the event that it is storming one night, there’s a movie theater near Hackensack called Bear Paws. If you want to get way off the beaten path, there a number of lakes back in the woods that rarely get fished, that often provide some great times. Or even take a day to go to Leech or Winnie.

Haha, thanks. One of those things where I just got into typing, hit submit, and holy cow! Long response.
May 19, 2015 at 3:27 pm #1546008Spent a few week long stays on the lake. Big enough to have a lot of options to fish, small enough for most any boat. Once the lake settles down around sunset is the time to go chase the walleyes. And like you said, several other lakes close by to check out too.
