Got some pics of a pack of wolves…seems that they have been hard on deer in the area. We have found lots of wolf crap with deer fur in it. Was wondering if anyone else has had anything like this before.

Northern MN
I’ve got quite a few more….same time in the day every timeMusky EdPosts: 673August 4, 2018 at 7:51 pm #1789550Had a place on the northern end of Wi, Eagle River. We were over run with deer. Could go outback of my house bowhunting, and see over a dozen deer a night. Wolves moved in, even one with a collar, while the DNR tried to deny their were any wolves around, I had them right in my yard, and the one with a collar had a den in a embankment behind my garage. The DNR lies when it comes to wolves. With in two years, we had virtually no deer left. Ended up quitting bow hunting on my land. After the wolves, if I saw six deer all season, that was a lot. Ended up having to move south a ways, to some what get away from them. While it may hurt some city persons feelings, as a sportsman, I have to say, the only good wolf, is a dead wolf.
TimmyPosts: 1235August 4, 2018 at 8:39 pm #1789554You should frame and sell those pics…..after all, wolves are endangered, so they must be rare,,,,,
Sarcasm aside, those are cool pics. Not unique though. We see them all the time around here. Had them chase my dogs into the yard more than once. Had friends locally that weren’t as lucky and had to pick up parts of their dogs in the yard. MN has lots of those critters……too many.
I do not believe the DNR “counts”. Not for a minute.
TimmyPosts: 1235August 4, 2018 at 8:46 pm #1789556Ed Sandle – your comments sound about identical to lots of people around here. It makes me laugh……. the “experts” behind the desk in a federal office know exactly what is happening here, and we are all just dumb barstool biologists on this subject.
Endangered my butt.
August 4, 2018 at 10:02 pm #1789570Agreed. I know a guy who was circled by wolves when he was bow hunting out of a tree stand. He had to call a friend to drive his atv through the woods to scare them off. Hoping that doesn’t happen anytime soon!
Musky EdPosts: 673August 5, 2018 at 6:55 am #1789576As to the DNR counting wolves, in Wi., they actually don’t do the counting. We used to have friends that were very pro wolf, and I put up with it, and never said anything when we got together as they were good friends of my wife. He told me that his group would always volunteer to be the ones doing the wolf counting survey every year. He used to chuckle about that. Our friendship ended when he tried to give me a signed wolf print, one night when we were out to eat. I decided to let him know my feelings about wolves. While i disagreed with his views as to wolves, I could still be social with him, but I guess that wasn’t good enough for him. My wife still meets his wife once in awhile, but I have never been invited since, and that’s just fine by me.

Our deer hunting prop is also in northern MN west of Duluth. First wind of wolves was sometime in the 1980s. Personally saw a pack of wolves while on stand in the mid 90s. We see hair filled scat and tracks on the property every winter. With the exception of 2014 we only see an animal once in a while but hear howling on a more frequent basis. Can’t say that I’ve seen the bare cupboard cleaning people talk about. We saw the deer population boom of the 2000s like everywhere else.
From a hunting perspective the real fear is the severe winter. That can be a real butt kicker. Our deer population took a complete nose dive after the severe winter of 2013-2014. A similar thing happened in 1996. Only saw three deer total while archery hunting for the 2014 & 2015 seasons. All the while the wolves were still there. After 3 mild winters the deer herd has rebounded significantly. The permit areas went from bucks only or limited antlerless permits back to HC in some cases.

Northwest, in the Thief River Falls area…about an hour from the Canadian border
