Wobbly Honda auger

Anyone notice this with their Honda? Although I have not owned my Strikemaster Honda auger for long (2-3 months) but I am disappointed in the design the way the powerhead fits, the way the shaft connects and bolts up to the drill bit, it seats wobbly. I notice the wobble upon first installation but didnt seem to think of it at first. Compared to my old Solo Lazer Pro that I sold off, the Solo seats and fits snug onto the drill bit. I havent used the Honda all season due to that ive been using an electric drill auger setup instead.

So this weekend I decided to take the Honda out to break it in the first time and upon drilling notice a considerable amount of wobbling. Just to make sure it wasnt just my auger I had a buddy that also has a Honda auger too that same day and I noticed the exact same issue. A fluke? Nope, my buddy says another buddy of his has an Honda auger also and same wobble.

It appears the shaft from the Honda that connects to the drill bit might be smaller causing the wobble? The only remedy to keep it from wobbling likely is to maybe use some soft of wrap or electrical tape and tape the shaft of the Honda as it seats inside onto to the power lazer drill bit. Disappointing…

It doesn’t take much for the collar bolt to work loose causing the “wobble”.
Put some locktite on the threads & snug it down.

I’m guessing that they use the same shaft as the solo’s. The shaft is coming out of the gear box, it’s not the actual crankshaft on the motor.

like Terry said make sure the bolt is tight. I had to put loctite on mine to keep it from loosening up as well.

I don’t have this auger but yes this is a poor design. In a perfect world the connection should be wobble free. In a perfect world, all the bolt should do is hold the auger from dropping and transfer rotational power. The design should NOT depend on the bolt to locate the auger concentric to the power shaft.
The reason for the sloppy fit is to keep production costs down. Who cares about making it properly as long as they can produce it for less money. (he said sarcastically)

I have that auger and the bolt loosens all the time causing wobble. But may not be your issue but mine doesn’t wobble when tight.

It has nothing to do with poor design. Like previously stated, the Allen head bolt vibrates loose. Use the Allen wrench provided to tighten it up, and I assure you it will not wobble. Again, a little loctite will take care of your problem.

How hard would it be to have factory applied Loc-Tite ? I for one know that they could order the hex head bolt with Loc-Tite already applied.

Update on my end, my collar bolt was tight that day i checked it on the Honda. But upon trying to loosen it last week I found somehow the bolt was damaged or broken. Luckily I was able to get it out. I put in a replacement collar bolt and it seems to be much more secured now with minor play. Too bad I wont get to use it again this ice season as im pretty much done. The electric drill auger setup from clam plate setup has really won me over. Might decide next season to sell the Honda :P.
