Spent last Friday and Saturday guiding a husband and wife duo from Idaho on a Chisago Area lake. They have a cabin on the lake that they’re family has had since 1901! A lot of memories there and I learned a lot talking with them about past experiences and how things have changed over the years. We spent part of each day just hanging out in the cabin and chatting. Some excellent stories and I couldn’t ask for better company!
We spent both days targeting bass and panfish. The action was fast and furious on Friday for both species. Caught a lot of big sunfish, some of which could potentially find themselves on the wall one day I was told “they were the biggest sunfish they’d ever seen on the lake in over 50 years!” A lot of true 10-inch fish with some over. Peter caught a hog that would rival the size of some dinner plates! A lot of these fish were post-spawn and holding just off the first break. There were also a lot of fish up in the shallows on their beds still but the largest fish seemed to have slid off. Caught all of our fish on 2″ Power Minnows, 2″ Power Tubes or Mister Twister Micro Shads. CrappieTom jig heads did the trick for securing the hookset!
The bass bite on Friday was decent too. Caught a lot of fish but struggled to catch any of size. Slugs put the majority of the fish in the boat but we switched to jigs and started catching quite a few as well. The bass were both shallow and deep and I think within the next week we’ll see a pretty consistent deep pattern… water temps ranged from 72-81 degrees depending on the location and time of day.
Saturday was a different story though… that nasty storm came through on Friday night and stirred things up. We still managed a few bass and a handful of panfish but the bite was definitely slower. We had to move a lot to catch our fish but it was a beautiful day to be on the water. We still had fun nonetheless.
Overall, I had a blast fishing with Debbie and Peter! What a great group of people with a ton of excitement for the sport of fishing. I’m already looking forward to their return next year!
