Tonka Report…

Spent the day guiding a couple guys you’re going to see on TV tonight and through the next few days pitching against the Twins…. I was fortunate enough to guide Darren Oliver and Frankie Francisco from the Texas Rangers yesterday out on Minnetonka. They had the day off while in town playing the Twins and decided to spend it on the lake.

The conditions were tough… high suns, very hot, minimal wind… and all we could target was panfish, walleye or pike… spent all day staring at huge bass but couldn’t even toss at one… talk about frustrating.

We spent most of the day pitching spinnerbaits for pike but also switched things up a bit and tried for a few carp The pike were virtually non-existent as we had one on the line but didn’t land it. We did manage to catch about a half-dozen bass but nothing over 3 pounds. The sunfish were EVERYWHERE and some good size ones. I hooked one on a spinnerbait that would have probably been the largest sunfish I caught in open water in the last couple years… I guessed it at close to 11-inches but it flopped off right by the boat… it CRUSHED my 3/4oz spinnerbait and held on for dear life… I about froze when I got a look at how big it was but just when I was about to lift it into the boat it fell off… stupid move on my part.

Water temps on mainlake were 68-72… back bays had temps hitting 77… warm water for sure. Weed growth was a little wierd… I expected more weeds and some bays even had none.

The muskies were also on the craze… had about 4-5 follows and hooked up with one on the end of a cast that was around 48-inches that cart-wheeled across the water only to throw my spinnerbait back at the boat. Giant fish, no doubt about it. Had to literally pull the spinnerbait away from another fish boatside or else it was going to crush it.

Overall it was a great day on the water. We had a lot of laughs and spent some time at Maynard’s for a quick drink and some food. A lot of people pointing fingers and a few sarcastic comments about “good luck against the Twins” were thrown at us. LOL.

Always great to see two genuine guys who make a ton of money but stay simple and respectful. It was no different than fishing with a couple long-time friends, as down to earth as could be… but don’t get me wrong, there was some Sh!@ talking too when it came to who caught fish

Hopefully everyone has a safe and fun Memorial weekend! Enjoy the weather and good luck for all you bass anglers! I know I’ll be out at 5am tomorrow going after a few myself!

Great report Matt! I met you up near Longville, Mn. on a 400 acre lake that your brother Ryan took you to. (His wifes cabin …). I was in the cabin next door. Post your reports more often!
PS…via forwarded family emails your email w/ your son fishing came to my inbox. Cute (and talented…) young fisherman! RR

Yea, my boy sure loves being in the boat! I’m lucky that enjoys it! I’m trying to find time to make it back up there… but it’s not looking good this summer. Ryan and his wife are expecting their first child in July and that will tie things up for them pretty good. I’m also booked almost every weekend from here through September… Good luck up there though and keep me posted on how things are going… good to hear from you again!
