Metro Walleye Report

I hit a small metro lake on Saturday evening of opening day. I didn’t have really any expectations and basically wanted to learn a new lake that DNR reports looked good on.

I started live bait rigging a crawler on a point with no success over about a half hour. I decided to try trolling crank baits along the same break from 6 to 8 feet of water. It didn’t take long and a 18″ walleye hit my #5 Shadling. On my next pass I picked up a 19 inch walleye on the same bait. I thought I found a nice pod of fish but that was it for me. They bit for a short window right at dusk and that was it.

It was a good two hours on the water. I’m excited to get back to this lake to explore things a little bit more. It’s nice to have the quality fisheries we do close to such a large metropolitan area.

So what lake were you fishing?? Most of the metro lakes are tough to figure out. Specially when your dogging jetskis and boats pulling tubes.

I don’t want divulge the name of the lake. It is very small and probably can’t handle a lot of pressure. I will say that it was in the west metro.

Nicely done! Small metro lakes can be a tough nut to crack in search of Walleyes. I’ve only had success on two little lakes that I can think of over the years.

I was able to coax 3 more walleyes to the boat on this lake Friday night. They only bit for about 30 minutes again or they moved and I couldn’t find them. They moved shallower this time so the bait of choice this time out was a #7 Perch colored shallow shad rap.

I’m interested to see if this bite improves going into June or if it tails off. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like they are jumping in the boat but it is good fishing close to home.

Caught a 25″ eye on a lake right next to the town of Prior Lake trolling Rapala’s in 18′ of water!

I’ll upload a photo after lunch!
