Medicine Lake report

I decided to get out to medicine lake today for some fishing. The wind was a little much, but nothing beats time on the ice no matter what the weather is.

It took me about 2 hours before I located active fish. It just happened to be in 33ft of water. I drilled a ton of holes in every depth but this is where the majority seemed to be. It didn’t take long before I started catching some fish. Thought they were going to be crappies , but turned out they were sunfish.

I settled in on this spot and fished until 7 pm. I didn’t have much to show for it. I left the lake with only 5 sunnies that were all in the 8 inch range. I did manage to catch some crappies, but nothing with size. I have always struggled to find keeper crappies on this body of water.

It didn’t seem like it mattered what presentation was used. The active fish bit on waxies and spikes. All the crappies were caught on minnows. I used a white diamond jig for the sunnies and a orange/white glow demon jig for the crappies. When I was packing up I was still marking fish on the flasher. I also managed to freeze my transducer to the side of the hole. I tried to chisle it free, but ended up cutting the cord .

I hope the this report on Medicine helps. I would also like to hear back if anybody has fished there this year. I am curious to see if anyone is catching crappies with size.

Nice report Jared, sorry I couldn’t make it out there today. I’m thinking about hitting the honey hole on Prior tomorrow, hope my transducer doesn’t freeze in!

Great report…Sorry to hear about your transducer..
I usually wait until late ice to fish medicine, when the crappies and sunfish move in shallow. I know that lake is full of panfish right now, a lot of sorting is necessary if your looking to keep some fish. Can be a great local lake to take the family/kids for some steady action.

Hey Brian not nice about the transducer . Did you get out to the honey hole at all. I might have to give it a try this weekend. After all nothing beats the sunfish, crappies, and northerns that seem to come out of that hole.
