After experiencing a tough bite on Mille Lacs Saturday, my Dad and I went after some metro panfish on Sunday morning before the big game. We were not disappointed. We drove out to find my buddies permanent set up on the edge of a large group of houses. From my mapping chip I could see that most of the houses were in 20-25 feet of water, but his house was on the edge in 15. I found out the house was right on the edge of the weeds. When the jigs got within 7 feet of the bottom, the flashers would light up with fish everywhere.
As far as jigs, we had our best luck with the “skin” colored gill pill. I also experimented with some mini merts, Marmooskas, small forage minnows, and eventually ended up with a “skin” colored diamond jig. The truth is the experimenting was more due to my Dad’s poor not tying abilities. I talked to two groups in the zoo over deeper water and it sounds like they didn’t do as well. Anyway, a great day on the water with my Dad and we had a huge fish fry for dinner.
