Drove threw the parking lot of Ham Lake tonight. It is froze up good. Monday when I checked it there was just a small opening in the center of the lake. Didnt venture out on the ice tonight but did see some foot track heading out.

So Matt, how fast does the Solo Strikemaster burn through 4 inches of ice?

about as fast as one chop with a chisel through 2 inches
eye_hunterPosts: 517December 11, 2009 at 5:36 am #822529sure is quiet, i wonder if the ice is not ready yet, or what. i thought there would be tons of people out fishing already. maybe everyone is holding back because of the snow. have you guys seen anybody fishing.
December 11, 2009 at 2:17 pm #822562I would think there are a lot of people holding off until this weekend or maybe even the following weekend. Some people just dont like to rush the ice. For those that cant wait with a little caution there should be plenty of ice to fish on this weekend.
You guys looking to head over towards Peltier again?
eye_hunterPosts: 517December 14, 2009 at 1:38 am #823122i was thinking of hitting centerville and peltier first too. but man, that lake is too big for fragging an ice house out and back. maybe a smaller lake would do for now.
December 14, 2009 at 4:38 am #823168I hear you about dragging fish houses across lakes. Not for me. Now pulling one out of the back of the truck and setting it up is more my style.
I headed a little north this weekend to some lakes where the walk out wasnt to bad. Didnt get much for my efforts unless you call catching a ton of lake shiners success. It wouldn’t surprise me to see vehicle traffic on some lakes by next weekend.
eye_hunterPosts: 517December 14, 2009 at 5:05 am #823174by vehicle traffic you mean small cars, or just ATV and snowmobile, cause i think its too early for cars.
and by the way, how many of you actually frag a otter ice house or similar out to the lakes. cause i just bought one and is really wondering if i should attempt it. that thing is 80 pounds. with added auger and bucket i’m looking at 100 pounds.
December 14, 2009 at 2:28 pm #823205I wouldn’t be suprised to see small cars and trucks with limited driving on the lakes by next weekend. As always there is someone that will drive all over. There was a car on the ice where I fished over the weekend. Same lake I found 3″ of ice on in spots. Lots of 4 wheelers out over the weekend. Im not the type of person to be the first one out there any more.
A young buck like yourself should have no problem pulling that fish house.
You wont catch me pulling one very far anymore. I think sometimes even worse than pulling those houses is trying to get them back in the truck by yourself. They are awkward to muscle around at times.
December 14, 2009 at 6:57 pm #823293I have a small portable and a big portable to combat the pulling issue. The small one is very light and can be pulled easily if the snow is not too deep. I’ve pulled the big house out a few times, but won’t do it again unless there is little snow. That is the good thing about early ice, most people don’t want to walk far. If you are willing to pull a small portable you can get on some good fishing far from the pack. I’d be happy with a few more weeks of 5-6 inch ice and light snow.
