Haven’t seen many if any posts about ice fishing on Waconia.
Anyone have any info about the panfish bite there?

Ron it has been getting pounded good this year. Lots of quality panfish and crappies, have seen lots of pics of 2lb. plus crappies. When they say a lake cycles with quality fish I would guess the crappies must be peaking, but when it does down I think the fishermen are going to have something to do with the decline. The meat guys are in full force out there. It has been discussed to death on another web site. I drive by and see all the houses and it just isn’t for me.

Thanks for the info. Daughter and son-in-law live in Waconia and we are going up next week.
I made reservations at In Towne Marina for a rental shack Thursday. Daughter has never ice fished before so want her first time to be pleasant.
Would be sweet if she could catch a few sunnies using the Marcum LX5. Don’t plan on keeping any this time.
Waconia’s news is both good and bad. Good the cycle and peak are up providing some decent fishing. Bad because as you said, the meat hogs will soon deplete it and then be the first to complain when it isn’t so hot anymore.
Not sure what the answer is, other then maybe some very severe restrictions on both size and limits.

We have been finding the sunfish very hard to come by in the past few days. We were killing them in 6-7fow. Can’t even by a decent one now. Crappies have been going really good late night, like 10pm-3am. Finding them deeper far away from crowds. I have been targeting saddle area’s that bottom out at 25′.

speaking of crappies biting late, I wonder where they all are during the day. they seem to dissapear and than reapear at night. for me at least. I wonder why they feed at night so agressively and not during the day?

I think it has to do with zooplankton and other micro organisms and their movements in relationship to the daylight, setting sun and darkness.

Well, we had a great time and caught lots of fish. About a third of them were keepers, however, we didn’t keep any this time.
Folks at In Towne Marina are really nice and very helpful with info.
They are to be commended for maintaining such clean shacks.
They said that this year has been the best for catching fish in the past several years.
Can only hope it stays that way for awhile.
