    Peltier Lake Report

Using a 10 foot diving crankbait I was able to pull 9 pike from the water between 4:45PM– 7:00 PM. All Pike we’re caught on an outside weedline in 8 FOW. By setting up just inside the weedline at 5 feet, I was able to cast to deeper water (8-10 FOW) and use an erratic retrieve to land fish. It spotted rain very lightly. Never thunder and at one or 2 times, sunlight came through the clouds over the entire lake. One Pike was covered in pumpkinseed looking spots over his entire body. All pike we’re between 6-8 inches diameter. I would consider their size average for the lake. Nothing to call home about.

For Bass, A jig flipped random into 5 feet emergent thick vegetation yielded no takers. A chanteuse spinnerbait in double Colorado was only running 2 feet deep. Also no takers.

If anyone wanted to learn how to flip a jig in heavy cover. Peltier might be a good starting lake. In 4-5 feet of water, there are plenty of small bass approximately 8-10 inch. A great place to take kids for steady action. A bigger concentration & quantity might make it easier to learn a new technique. For more a higher quality fish, try flipping a ½ jig into 8 FOW. Or try a different lake. Perhaps Bald Eagle or Chisago area lakes.

When learning to flip, bring several different jigs and trailers. If possible, rig several different rods ahead of time. Position yourself with the boat and use the same amount of line to hit multiple targets. Flipping is a close water technique that can yield quality fish. Count down your jig to see how far it is to the bottom. Some people will flip a jig, let it fall ¾ way down, pull the jig out & onto the next hole They intend to only catch the most active fish, in effort to save time. I suggest when learning, to let your jig fall to the bottom. Then lift the jig off the bottom to get a feel for what it is like when you DON’T have a bite. After a few seconds, shake jig rattles to attract a fish then move on to the next hole. Finally, and most important… watch your line as your lure descends. If it stops short, you most likely have a fish. Set the hook. Hooksets are free ! If it feels like your jig may be sitting on a weed halfway down, guess what.. you may be right.. You also may be wrong You’ll never know unless you set the hook ! Did I mention hooksets are free !!

    Fish on

    All fish caught we’re released.
