Plenty of small bass & sunfish in 4 to 5 feet in thick thick weeds. All of them are on the surface. If your looking to take kids out for some action as a first priority.. it’s good to go ! Try a live bait setup on a slip bobber. If you have a trolling motor, make sure your battery is charged. Cruise over the weed flats with your motor. Polarized lenses are a must. Cruise weed flats until you see some open holes. Some openings are 12 – 15 feet in diameter. Cast slip bobbers into this area for some nibbles.
For more quality pike, try the outside weedlines in 8 to 10 feet of water. Yesterday I hooked up on a large pike by casting a 4 foot depth crankbait into 8 feet and reeling it back towards me to deeper water. If they didn’t hit within the first few cranks away from the weedbed I would burn it back in & recast. I wasn’t able to land the pike.. He said “No Way”, turned away & kept my crankbait & a mouthful of hooks.. Hope he can spit it out !
Good thing it wasn’t a Lucky Craft
Slow retrieve reel 5:1 ratio on a fiberglass rod is really a great feeling when it loads up with a quality fish.
Also, Awesome thing to see… Sunfish beds looked like Honeycombs on south side of the lake on an inside weedline. They went on forever ! If you ever wanted to experiment with drop shotting shy fish.. it’s funny to drag some different presentations in front of their face. Usually a sunfish would maul just about anything thrown their way..Let me be the first to start the latest trend – “macaroni drop shot”
Fish on !!
PS Alot more weeds then previous years ! For more quality bass, I would have flipped the outside weed edges and spent time punching through deeper hydrilla.
