I was on the south end of Phalen lake this afternoon, and saw one of the coolest things ever. Carp at least 1 1/2 – 2 feet long jumping almost all the way out of the water. I know they were carp because they were jumping not 20 feet from me.

So why do they do this ????????????????????????

I think they might be playing underwater tag or something.. Trying to elude the one who’s it. Ive heard some fish jump to clean out their gills, but I dont buy it. I think they are just playing around.

I kind of figured that no one really knew why they jump, but it was worth a shot.

Yes it was fun to watch.

Funny, today I was just thinking why does any fish jump? And when they are jumping, they don’t seem to be biting?

Alot of the time when the carp are jumping they are feeding on the surface. Good time for flyfishing our ugly scaled buddies.

Some might say to remove parasites, but I doubt that. Although they might do it to scratch an itch they can’t quite get at. Like when they rub themselves on rocks. Another possibility could me communication? A way to call out to other carp in the area?
