Well, last night sure was a windy one… but not windy enough to blow the house away with me sitting in it. So a buddy and I set out to look for the elusive Slab Crappie out on Blue again last night (Sunday).
Good news all around… the bite is still on… though it seems to be getting later and later. My buddy set up in 17 FOW and I was set up in about 20 FOW. We got out on the lake with holes drilled and settled down at about 8pm… and almost instantly had action. It was pretty slow at first, but as the night wore on, the frequency and size seemed to increase. We fished until a little after midnight, and only left due to the time… the crappies were still coming in. We threw back quite a few that were not much on size. We ended up coming home with 12 crappies in the 8-13 inch range. Some pretty decent eaters still hitting the line.
My buddy used green jigs (not sure brand) and a white ant. I used a green (tiger) mini mert on one and the white/brown mini-mert on the other. I have to say that the white/brown mini-mert produced all the crappies for me… as well as something that looked like a cross between a bullhead, catfish, and eelpout. Not quite sure what it was… But what ever it was, I think I caught another because a little while after that, something bit and snapped my 2 lb test line. I Liked that color.
The crappies were suspended anywhere between 13 feet and 9 feet. Most of the bites coming in the 11 to 12 foot range. I had some larger marks on my marcum LX5 coming in at 6 to 9 feet, but couldn’t get anything to bite up there. We were marking fish consistently… which is to say that I don’ think there was a single time where we didn’t have at least one fish on the screen… There were plenty of times where the marcum looked like a christmas tree. These times offer the best chance of a bite… but are also difficult to target specific fish. I am one that likes to jig and lure a fish in to bite. When your entire screen is lit up… and you can’t tell your jig from a fish besides for raising it way up beyond their level in the water column… just makes it difficult. So, jig for all the fish and hope something picks it up. Was a great time though!!!
Ice conditions on blue are still good. There were some vehicles out there, but I would not suggest driving out. There are 2 access points on the lake, so there really isn’t any reason why you would need to drive… feel free to walk out or drive atv/sled. There seems to be a good 18 to 22 inches of ice… but with the top 6-8 being frozen slush… and with the changing of temps daily, I would suggest driving a 4 wheeler than risking your life. I know from years past that the north end can get tricky… there is running water up there. And you never know where the ice is going to thin up first.
Good Fishing!!!
