Well, after getting my auger fixed this morning, I figured I didn’t have time to head to the lakes that I wanted to try out for Walleyes and Crappies. Have a banquet to go to this afternoon… and only a few hours to fish. So I went and hit ol’ faithful… Coon Lake. Well, Not sure why I gave her that name because today was anything but!
There was quite the crowd out there today. Now that the lake is decent for driving on, everyone is out there with their pick-em-ups and vans and cars. I set up outside of the crowd along the normal shoreline I usually fish. Ice out there is about 18-22 inches where I drilled. Good solid ice. Wasn’t talking at all today. I set up a couple Frabil insulated tip-ups, 30# tipup line, steel leader and #2 Gold hooks tiped with medium shiners. I was fihsing in about 7 FOW. After about 10 minutes, I had my first flag. Wait, let me rephrase that… after 10 minutes, I had my only flag. Pulled in a dinky little northern and immediately put it back. That was about all the action I had to show for the 3 hours I was out there.
There were a higher than normal amount of people fishing out of shacks today… both perms and portables. This lake is known for decent pike, so you normally see most people fishing tip-ups only. Today was not one of those days. It may have been the wind that changed their minds. Anyway, The good solid ice also provided for quite a bit of traffic out there… which may have contributed to the lack of flags. Between the 4-wheelers, sleds, and a few cars and SUVs that were flying at 50 mph through the fishing area and a few that were just around whipping themselves around pulling donuts… I thought that I might as well give up for the day. It hink this is a typical good-ice weekend on Coon Lake. Much different than if you were to hit this lake in the middle of the day. I might have to take a day off and go try one of those other lakes pretty soon
