Crappies Minnetonka

    Cold one last night but the fish didn’t seem to mind. The crappies continue to be very fincky. I was averaging one bite for every four looks and if I had not been using a spring bobber (I love the St Croix rods!) I would have gone home skunked. By far the best bait was a Glow Nuggie on an Optic Stealth jig. I quickly learned to ignore the first hit count to three then set the hook. The crappies would just hang on to the Nuggie and I had to give them a chance to inhale it. I tried minnows and waxies but the few crappies I caught using them were small. Location was the bottom ~25ft of a steep break. Most of the crappies were suspended anywhere from 12ft to 20ft. The Glow was a key attractor. Every time I charged the jig up I would bring in several fish on the drop.

    Tonights game plan is to use some of the other Little Atom plastics and see if a slightly smaller presentation converts more lookers. I had inadvertantly left my rod bag outside the Otter and there was just no way I was going to go out and get it.

    Thanks Mark;
    Are you getting any size out there?

    The usual Tonka catch. A bunch of 8 and 9 inchers with the occasional 12 inch. They sure are thick for the size though. Very well fed which always make me wonder why all these 8 to 9s don’t turn into 11 to 12s? But that’s Minnetonka. With the ice finally thick enough to drive on I’ll be doing some searching for new spots hopefully with slab crappies and might spend some time chasing walleyes. Only two more weeks until pike time. Have a spot that just spits out numbers of decent pike but only in late February. Can’t believe it but ice time is almost up. Pool 4 here I come!

    Yea, I have a few buddies who have been struggling a little bit for pike lately on Tonka.

    Have you been seeing much for folks pulling out any decent walleyes?

    Early ice for those who could get out was good but for some reason walleyes become very scarce in mid to late winter. This year may be even worse than usual from what I hear.
