I went and poked holes in a few lakes today, and some yesterday… this is what we got…

Nokomis: Up to 4″, the entire lake between the 2 beaches froze late(couple days ago), stay off that area for now! There were other pockets of open water a couple days ago, check ice if you go out!

Hiawatha: Up to 4 1/2″, and a ice skate rink size space of thin ice in front of the beach, and the *creek path* just froze recently.

Lake of the Isles: 4″ about 50 yards out on the west shore, I know this lake had open water 4 days ago over the deep hole. Check the ice as you walk if you venture out.

Calhoun and Harriet: LESS THAN 1″

West end of Tonka is covered and walkable if you pay attention. Several portables out last night. East end still has open water but shorelines are 4+”. At these temps probably adding an inch a day so weekend should be OK but I’d still be extra careful.

Thanks Dave, I want to hit Harriet or Calhoun this year, but looks like i have to wait. I’d love to get out on Saturday for a couple of hours, but 40 degrees? I wonder how Cedar is doing as that is a little smaller and shallower than those 2, right?

Haven’t be able to get out and won’t until Monday – just too much unneeded and unwanted clutter to deal with. I will be out next week big time and will post the results. And yeah that’s me.

I dont mess around on cedar much pug, I couldnt tell you the ice thickness, but I sm certain I wouldnt be out there quite yet. Its not all that shallow and it takes some time to freeze.

Thanks. I won’t be messing with any area lakes soon, but I might hit Peltier on Sunday. Depends on the ice report my brother comes back with from today and how warm it gets tomorrow.

    UPDATE

Most the lakes are walkable. Areas I checked with 4″ of ice 2 days ago have 7″ now. The CO told me there is 5″ on the south side of harriet and people were fishing. Calhoun has to be close.

Using extreme caution and checking ice as you go, people should have no problem finding a place to fish in Minneapolis.

just drove around Hariet and there is open water on both ends. Will take awhile to freeze up now. Becasue the lake is so deep it will take awhile to get the deep water to cool down. I’m going to try a small western metro lake here in about an hour to see how it is. I’ll report back if good?

    Be safe as always.

Are you sure it wasnt water on top of the ice?

The lake I have been fishing did not lose any ice yesterday, but you could see minor stress to the ice… got some little tiny air bubbles going. The ice there is still very good, but we dont need much more of this warm weather.. honeycombing would start to happen before too long.

I know geese and ducks have a small spot open on calhoun as they do every year. I dont know if this is the case at harriet, I havent been by it for a few days.
