I was lucky enough to spend this morning on about 4″ of safe clear ice. went out looking for walleyes but found nice sunfish instead. i fished a small rearing pond loaded with walleyes however i didnt feel safe walking to where they were so i just settled for pan fish. shouldnt be long though and we can walk out on all the lakes

I saw a guy ice fishing Emerald lake on Minnetonka this afternoon. Guy must have big balls. Probably only about 3 inches. I only have 4 inches on my backyard pond that is only 5 feet deep.

Isn’t it illegal to fish rearing ponds?

Ranger.. I wouldnt assume anything before drilling holes. ice does form quicker in some locations for various reasons. Your back yard pond may not form ice that quickly if its wind protected. Once there is ice, wind actually helps the ice thicken quicker. The air temperature is generally much lower than the temperture of the ice, if there is no wind to move that air at the ice surface, the ice will almost act like a heater and slow the ice making process. If the wind is blowing, it will constantly recycle cold air to the surface of the ice.

I am finding up to 4″ as of yesterday afternoon within the metro.. but the same lakes have pockets of open water.. pretty spooky.
