I have had the oppurtunity to get out the last few days on some south metro lakes and the fishing has been hit or miss.
Water temps have averaged abetween 43-47 degrees depending on location. Green weeds have definitely been the key where they have been available. Although on one lake I found a shoreline with brown dead weeds and it held the most fish on the entire lake! I found all my fish on inside weedlines in 2-6 feet of water. In the lakes I have been fishing there has not been a present deep weedline and I believe that is the only reason I am not finding fish in deeper water.
Baitfish has been another key to locating these fish. I have found schools of sunfish on the surface outside these inside weedlines where the schools have been. Suprisingly the fish have been schooled very tightly in specific locations along the inside edge. A 1/4 ounce jig has been the big fish producer by far. I have been trimming the skirt back to the bend of the hook and throwing a 2 3/4 inch trailer. The best color has been black neon ( black with red flake). Most strikes were coming poping the bait of the weed clumps, the slower you could move it the better. The only other bait I have had success on larger fish with was a Smithwick Suspending Rogue( Orange and Black). I was snapping the bait 2-5 times with a 10-15 second pause in between. Most strike came when the bait first went to move after the pause. Although I have not had any 50 fish days I have had some Giants come in the boat! (No pics though fishing alone) Even though the water is cold there still is ome excellent fishing to be had, Good Luck guys!
