Went down to a shore spot underneath the 35W bridge tonight. Fished for carp from 6 to 8. Caught nine carp ranging from 2 lbs. up to 14 lbs. All fish were caught on a Festal corn rig with a #2 walleye hook with a single 1/16 oz. splitshot rigged 2-3 ft. above the hook. This particular set-up is my favorite carp tactic. The light splitshot coupled with the long distance between the hook is the ultimate finesse rig for carp in lower current and lake conditions. It allows the corn to randomly float around as if it were weightless and allows even the most fickle, tricky carp to take the bait without noticing the hook or weight of the sinker…. Towards the end of the evening I resorted to the good ol’ Cornhead Jig( the rig consists of 4-6 kernels of corn strung up along the hook and up onto the line above the hook and a nightcrawler below the corn) This particular rig resulted in a couple bonus fish. One being an 18″ Smallmouth and two being a nice 8lb. Flathead, of which you don’t see too many in pool one. If anyone out there is looking for some good action on the carp right now they are biting quite well on the river. Just about any place with some slack current and a little deeper water nearby should produce. Good luck! Sorry for no pictures tonight as I was by myself.

If anyone is seriously interested in catching “tuna” carp, talk to the local grain elevators located on the Minnesota river. As a kid, I caught carp up to 30lbs!!!!!! My brother works at the Harvest States in Savage and there is monster carp in the harbor!!!!!!

What is a festal corn hook? Is the anywhere I can go to so I can see what it looks like? Or could you please post a pic of it? Where are they available at? I know, alot of questions, but you have my interest here. I’m a walleyes only guy who has spent the past year multispieces fishing for a change and having a blast.

    Thanks, Bill
