Last night I was thinking about all of the time I have spent on the water this year. Initially I was focusing on the fact that I had not been able to hit many bodies from years past. (Gas Prices! ) Then I realised how great a season it has already been. We are all very fortunate to have such great water within a short drive of our communities. I am from the west metro and do not need to drive more than 30 mintues to get into some GREAT action! You name it! Smallies, LM, even those walleyes or Cats!

Here are just a couple pictures from the season so for. The LM is from Tonka. This is your typical 5lb mid summer deep water fish. Anynone who hasn’t figured out this bite needs to! It’s somtimes hard to believe that you can be stuck in the middle of town pounding these fish.

The second and third are smallies from a small lake 35 minutes from down town! Sorry for not giving the name. But it’s very small ond could be hurt very easily.

My point is. Don’t let gas prices or time keep you off the water. There are huge opprotunities just out your back door. And for goodness sake! TAKE A KID FISHING!

Hey! Lets see some Metro pictures.

well thanks for sharing them pics, I am on tonka every weekend trying to find them big fish, just can’t put it together. I really don’t know how to fish the deep water bass, but want to learn. looks like a rapala DT on that one pic. I am mostly all top water fishing right now. other than pitching docks but not really good with plastics yet.

    Shane,

Get your boat into 20 ft of water and start working weed edges or rock transitions. Try what ever is comfortable. Tezas rig, Carolina rigs, even jigs. Take your time and watch where you get bit. The patern will begin to present it’s self quickly.

Tonka if FULL of big fish. This time of year they get schooled up in deep water. When you find them the boat can be loaded quickly! Shoot me a PM if you have any questions.

Shane think Rap DT16 and 3/4 to 1oz spinnerbaits slow rolled. You don’t necessarily need to go to jigging/worming for deep water bass. Count your spinnerbait down (10 count if in 15ft of water) then reel slowly – just fast enough to turn blades and keep it off bottom. You will also run into some big northerns doing this so you might want to use braided line or 20lb mono. DT16 in green tiger, hot mustard or bluegill are great for deep water.

I will have to try that, but usually when I go out, the guy that normally goes with me like to fish top water and pitch docks, so I don’t get much of a chance to hit the deep water. I guess I just need to head out on my own and just use my plastics and try to fish that way. if anyone wants to head out on day, let me know, I will gladly take you out for a lesson on plastics. what I should do is look up mike finke and have him take me out for a guide trip and have him show me how to fish plastics.

I also have sinking rattle traps, do them work pretty good in the deep weeds as well?

    Shane,
I’d say it would be easier to throw a DT crankbait that is made for the depth you want to fish, than to fish a Rattle Trap at deeper depths, or like someone also said, slowroll a heavy spinnerbait.
    good luck.

SInking Rattle trap would work. Just anchor over 15ft, drop the trap over the side and count until it hits bottom. Gives you an idea how to count it down. Don’t need to be deadly accrurate and err on the shallow side. Bass will come up a long ways to hit a crankbait. And throw a big trap this time of year.
