Went to Turtle lake this morning. When I went to put the boat in there was a guy fishing on the dock with a bobber and rather large minnows. as I put the boat in he hooked into an 8″ large mouth. He took his time getting the hook out and I mumbled to my wife he better release that fish. I went to park the car and saw my wife saying something to him. As I walked by him he had a large pail. I looked in it to see the 8″ bass and a 11″ bass. I told him he needed to put them back in the lake as Turtle lake is a catch and release lake. He said “no Bass?” and did not make any attempt to put them back. English not being his primary language he pretended not to understand. I got in my boat and called the tip line on my cell phone. we fished for about an hour and a half. A couple of snakes and 4 nice Bass. Found them on the outside weed edge in 10 fow. We got back to the ramp and a dnr officer was in the lot. Told him I was the one that called the tip line. He said the guy was gone when he got there. The officer said next time to get a license plate number and he would pay him a visit at his house. I was impressed that the dnr did follow up.

You did the right thing! I have found that a lot more people than I thought dont really give a rip about the conditions of our waters. Saw four people (English not their first language) fishing at one of my favorite trout holes, drove by after they left and found three huge bags of trash that they left behind. The DNR is so under funded that they are not able to catch these types of people. Good to know they did follow up on it.

Were they Hmongs? Not to generalize but they sure have a hard time releasing anything. I saw a national geographic special on Loas and Vietnam on PBS and they said that all the inland rivers are completely devoid of fish because the natives ate them all. Hopefully that doesn’t happen here, unless of course they clear out all the carp.

There are plenty of white, black, yellow, green, etc. people that break game and fish laws. Call TIP on all of them!

P.S. I really think that last post from crawdaddy should be removed. I saw a thing once on PBS that said… Come on. I also don’t see how english speaking ability is relevant to eyebuster’s story.

I dont disagree with crawdad’s assessment. I dont like to generalize people generally lol, BUT when I do see people poaching (and ive called the line a couple times myself) they do GENERALLY happen to be hmong

Perhaps Crawdaddy is pushing the limits of what is allowed on this site, but on the other hand let’s not bury our heads in the sand either! Hmong are not the only people breaking fish and game laws, nor are Mexicans the only nationality hopping the border….but they get the lion’s share of the print for good reason.

Zoomer, Thanks, you did the right thing by calling TIP!

There’s always a fine line when we discuss race issues in the public forums. I don’t think this was intended to be a thread about race issues. Bringing race into this discussion takes away from the original message. Zoomer’s main point is that there is a TIP line available, he used it and the DNR responded. Nice job Zoomer. We encourage everyone to do the same.

AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!! I called three times this year in IA for guys shooting pheasants out of car windows, don’t know if the local authorities ever followed up or not, your story is a comforting affirmation that taxpayer dollars are being distributed appropriately.

Amen!!! To all the post above. If you haven’t noticed, my username is “MyThai”. This means that I am not born/birth in the USA. Oh by the way, I am married to my wonderful wife from North Dakota and she is white (polish, bohunk, and irish). “MyThai” is actually a nickname. I am her “MyThai” (from Thailand). Yes, I can speak my native language and also AMERICAN ENGLISH very well. I also served in the U.S. Air Force for 9 years with more security access than most US born can attain. I completely agree with everyone in this thread. Just because we live in the US, we cannot use our relaxed laws (loop holes) to our personal gains. It makes me sick to see foreigners taking advantages of our laws. Sorry!!!! I am off my soap box now!!!

Its nice to them able to respond (they are busy with little help). I called two duck openers ago when a guy on the lake I was on shot a swan at about 7am and was trying to call in other ducks. The officer showed up at the landing about 15 min later and called me to pick him up. He told me 5 others had called also. He only had a canoe so I gave him a ride. Not a fun job to have to walk up on guys you know are armed!

Call the tip line whenever it is needed. In Wisconsin I get checked and I am glad they are doing their job. Underpaid overworked and not respected by some.

Any help we can give them is appreciated. I was told this directly when I called the TIP line.

I agree with you Diesel, due to my “limp” status I have a permit to shoot from a stationary vehicle. I was parked in a private field last year and sat in the bed of my truck and bagged a buck…got a call later from the local CO because a hunter on the adjacent property saw the shot and called TIP. I was glad they followed up to make sure everything was legal, I know COs aren’t always your favorite person to see, but I have to respect the work they do!

Kudos to you, my friend…I have a neighbor who thinks he is doing the lake behind my house a favor by stocking carp in there.

…the same neighbors who fought tooth and nail to be able to mow their yard down to the water’s edge instead of following the city’s mandated 30′ conservation easement requirement that helps filter out pollutants.

…the same neighbor who runs his gas-leaking power boat on the same 5 acre lake.

They’re all a bunch of boneheads who deserve to get turned in.

Just wanted to say thank you for calling.

I fish a few of the metro lakes and and see people taking way to many and under sized fish. Now that I have the number I will probaly have to make a few calls myself.
