I got out on Waconia on Sat around 9 and was determined to fish deep all day. I started the day fishing the sharp weed edges around Cemetery reef with very limited success. I threw the box at them but only had a couple of fish to show for my efforts. Around 11 my brother decided to show up and after picking him up we headed out to another weedline I have previous not fished but heard some good things about. After finding the break and getting my first cast out, I immediately had a fish on and threw the marker out. After landing the 3.5 # bass taking a couple pictures and putting it back in, I got bit again. This time a 2.5#. My brother is now scrambling to change his bait to what I’m using. After getting set up and casting it out he got bit. We ended up getting a fish every couple of minutes for the next half an hour. All the fish where between 2-4#, which was nice.
After this fishing slowed, we worked the weedline up and down without too much success; except for a bonus sheephead that hit my brother Texas rigged senko. Go figure. We came back to the marker and tried to work the area over again, this time changing the baits up to see if we could turn the school back on. A boat showed up and started fishing about 120 feet from us and progressively got closer to us and I mean close. At one point they are directly over my marker and within 25 feet of my boat. Talk about inconsiderate. We proceeded to get two more fish in front of them (one 4#), which was great. After about a half an hour of them within 30 yard of us and not fish they decided to leave and hit another deep weedline. We got a couple of fish but nothing too special.
I then decide to go against my game plan and hit a shallow shoreline with some laydowns prior to going in that I have had some good luck on in the past. We pulled up to the first laydown and casted close to the edge of a fallen tree with finesse worm and immediately get hit. I made a good hook set and luckily the fish came out of the tree and went deep, turn and heads back to shore. At this point I get my first glimpse of the fish and can tell it is a pig. After fighting it for a couple minutes we finally land it and it disbelief, it is my biggest largie to date. This fish measured 21.75” and I guess a little over 6#. I could fit a fist and a half in its month. After a couple pictures we putting this baby back it for another day. Wow what a trip. After that fish we went a little further down the shoreline, caught a couple more and called it a successful day.
The weedline that we really caught the fish on was a place you knew should hold fish. It came out perpendicular to the shoreline then took a quick 90 degree turn. The weeds where thick from 6-10 and then it would sporadically clear out till 14. We caught all the fish in the sporadic weeds, 10-14 feet. The fish where caught on 5” blue worm fished on a jig worm, a Texas rigged 6” paddle worm (blue), and then we got a couple on brown/orange jig. By far the most fish came on the 5” and 6” worm. The technique was pretty straight forward, cast it out and jig the worm up and down back to the boat. You would get the fish right when you felt the weeds or right after you popped it off. We tried cranks and spinnerbaits but didn’t have any luck.
I am hoping to get out there again as the fishing should only get better.
