    Got out on Tonka again this morning for a few hours. Started out on my new favorite spot on the lake. Started shallow, with nothing to show for our efforts with both top water and suspending baits. Headed for the deep edge of the flat where we did well last week. As soon as we got out there something was crashing the bait fish like mad.

    We threw numerous baits to find out mostly small pike seemed to be working the area. I switched over to a phantom and 3 short jerks into my first cast I hooked up with something solid only to have it come lose seconds later. Just as we were about to turn around and work this edge one last time I noticed a dark shadow below my boat following the phantom. I instictively started my figure 8 as the fish disappeared under the boat. Only to have it explode boat side on the second turn of the 8. HOLY SMOKES does all hell break lose when you hook a 40 inch fish with only inches of line out. I knew I put the hooks to this fish good, but in my panic of trying to free spool and head for the back of the boat the line snapped as quickly as it all started. My first hook up with a legitimate ski.

    What I feel the worst about is the fact I sent a beautiful fish to the depths with a phantom in it’s mouth. I hope it shook it lose or that it will fall out in a couple days. I’m guessing the fish in the 40 inch range, not a trophy by any means, but I would have sure been proud to popped the cherry on her.

    I’ll be back at it one night this week!!!

    I’m fishing with 80lb gorilla braid. It’s completely my fault for not re-tieing before the day started.

    Cal,

    Along with my lack of preparation is my instict to panic, they are great combinations.

    Anyone know a good place to replace my phantom?? Thorne doesn’t carry the color I lost.

    Kooty;
    Let me know what color……..I got to pay a visit to Todd (owner of Phantom Lures) and get a few more baits.

    Sucks for the heartbreaker…….We’ll go pay her a visit on Thursday and settle the score!

    Bob, I might be getting out on Wed night since I can’t make Thursday work with Gary. You want to hit Indy or Tonka??

    Sorry to hear about the Merc, but what did you expect.

    I also need to know where I can get one of those lures you were using last summer, you know the one you made into a jointed version off the maxum.

    I am going to have to take a rain check Kooty, but thanks. Being a Yammie owner prior to the Ranger, I am less then pleased with the Merc at this time, shes at the Doc right now, so we will see what comes of it. That Salmo that I turned into a jointed bait is called the Skinner. I purchased them up north in Walker,but you shold be able to find them in town at any place that handles Salmo …Thanks again for the invite, but Momma aint gonna let me play this week

    Stay away from the big Skinner or your arms will fall off. Its a great bait to troll, but tough on the arms. The smaller ones are great for casting and twitching, or bashing off the trolling motor……

    I had a monster musky on Sat… for all of 5 seconds anyway. I was checking out the sunnies around my dock and it just swallowed one. Happened twice in 1/2 hour. High 50″ fish. No chance with 3lb test and a ultralight. After the first hit I starting throwing musky lures one after another. Gave up went back to panfishing had a sunnie on and it shot out from under my dock and did it again. The musky is just hanging around the dock picking off sunnies when hungry. Drop on by Gary. Maybe the pink phantom is the ticket. I don’t own one.

    Well, finding a skinner in this area stinks. I called several stores, but had no luck. So I ended up ordering from a place in WI. Got a pretty good price. I think this bait is going to be killer on Tonka. Look out muskies!!!
