Got out on Tonka again this morning for a few hours. Started out on my new favorite spot on the lake. Started shallow, with nothing to show for our efforts with both top water and suspending baits. Headed for the deep edge of the flat where we did well last week. As soon as we got out there something was crashing the bait fish like mad.
We threw numerous baits to find out mostly small pike seemed to be working the area. I switched over to a phantom and 3 short jerks into my first cast I hooked up with something solid only to have it come lose seconds later. Just as we were about to turn around and work this edge one last time I noticed a dark shadow below my boat following the phantom. I instictively started my figure 8 as the fish disappeared under the boat. Only to have it explode boat side on the second turn of the 8. HOLY SMOKES does all hell break lose when you hook a 40 inch fish with only inches of line out. I knew I put the hooks to this fish good, but in my panic of trying to free spool and head for the back of the boat the line snapped as quickly as it all started. My first hook up with a legitimate ski.
What I feel the worst about is the fact I sent a beautiful fish to the depths with a phantom in it’s mouth. I hope it shook it lose or that it will fall out in a couple days. I’m guessing the fish in the 40 inch range, not a trophy by any means, but I would have sure been proud to popped the cherry on her.
I’ll be back at it one night this week!!!
