Mrs. Rootski and I spent the afternoon on DeMontreville chasing Bass. It was a beautiful day and everything was great except the fish weren’t cooperating very well. We finally did find some active fish in the deep weeds around 10-11 feet of water. I was using a 3/8 oz Team Supreme bass jig with a plastic trailer. The slower the better yesterday. I’d drop the jig to the bottom and just shake it in place, and wait for the line to feel “heavy”. My wife was excited to try out her new St. Croix Premier rod and once she got used to the action she was casting like a pro.

Looks like it’s still a little early to chase those bass on the fly rod.

Awhile back you said that you had good place on P2 for chasing carp with a fly. Love to here about it.

I landed my first one a fly about a week ago on the St. Criox. It was close to 30″ and maybe 10-12lbs. Now that’s a blast!

Wondering if anyone has gotten out on Demontraville lately?
I am thinking about heading out there soon.
What happening with the weeds? Water color? Bass still chomping?
    thanks

I’ve been hitting it once every weekend and still am catching fish, around 15 in a 4 hour span. They seem to be scattered everywhere but most of my fish are still coming from 5′ or less of water. Covered alot of outside weedline last weekend with nothing to show. Size is still good with 4 over 18″ last outing. Nothing what-so-ever on topwater on any area lakes that I hear. Weeds are in good shape, thats where the fish are.

Did you get out to ‘Montre this weekend? I was determined to get a topwater bite going so I went to Jane on Sunday, still nothing happening on topwater but I couldn’t get any pattern going. Only ended up with 9 but one was 20 1/2″ so I’ll consider it a decent outing. Caughgt them from 1-18’fow which tells you how locked in I was

I was planning on getting out there yesterday but when we got to the launch it was too late as the spots where all filled. I guess getting to the lake a 7:00-7:15 is early enough on that lake. I will be making a trip there in the coming weeks though
Did you get any pictures of your piggie?

    Dan,

I’ve been getting to the landing at 5:00 this past month an am usually about boat number 3 but things are filled easily by 6:30. As the weeds grow and fishing gets more challenging I would expect less people like I saw last year.

    Hey Dan,

I got out there this morning. Man it sure felt good to get the boat back out and see the sun rise on “D”, it’s been about 6 weeks since my surgery so this was the first time I’ve been out there since early June. Nothing like a warm July morning and some fly rod-topwater action!

I found several quality fish on the inside edge of the weeds. An 18, two 19’s, and a 20 inch dandy. It’s really exciting when you stick a 20 inch fish and then have to horse it through 15 feet of heavy weeds to get it to the boat! I also caught about a dozen fish along the outside edges but they were all small.

The best presentation was a Dahlberg Diver fishing like a topwater. I also caught a few on a fly called a “Buzz Bomb” which is a fly fisherman’s version of the old propellor plugs, like Devil’s Horse (now I’m dating myself).

The lake wasn’t too busy so maybe it’s starting to slow down out there. It doesn’t help when Outdoor News, the St. paul paper, the Minneapolis paper, Minnesota Sportsman and probably the Ladies Home Journal all recommend DeMontreville for it’s Bass fishing. It’s to small to take that kind of heat!

    Hope everybody did well today.

Thanks for the report. It sounds like the bigger fish are on a chew though, gotta love that.
I didn’t get try to get out on demontraville since I got up at 7:30 on Sat and figured there was not chance to get a trailer spot. I did get out on waconia…

At least you got out, and from what I hear Waconia is a great lake. We’ll have to get together sometime at DeMontreville!

    Rootski,

Great to see you’re pulling in the big ones and even better that topwater is coming around. I haven’t been out for a couple weeks but had the frogs show up on the garage with the hot weather and figured the bass would be surfacing. Do you ever venture through the channel to see what Olsen has to offer? I hear in summer it produces better than “D”?

    Hey Schmidtty!

Even time I see your “handle” I think about that red-headed guy in the TV commercial with the college buddies harrasing him

Yep, I usually hit both bodies of water when I get out there. Sometimes one is better than the other. Olson seems to hold most of the Pike during the hot summer months
for some reason. And it has some interesting structure out in the open if you know where to look. My best fish from Olson was just shy of 23 inches, caught on an old Bomber. BTW, last Saturday I found most of my fish right where I saw you guys throwing Senkos back in June.

We should partner up one of these days and really teach those old Basses a lesson.

I am in Italy right now for business but plan to hit the water this weekend when I get back so you may see me out there in the same area with Senkos locked and loaded. I could very much go for a 23″ momma, this is not the only one I’ve heard of that size coming from there.

Now where did you get these 23″ bass?
I have the afternoon free on Sat and am wondering if it is even possible to get out there then. (assuming a half decent day) Are the spots all filled?
How big are you thinking those 23′ where then? ~7# Those are some monster fish

    DanK,

I caught Bass of that size everywhere from under docks in a foot of water to the edge of a weedline in 14 feet of water. The big ones are where you find them; if you could predict it better we’d catch them more often.

If the weather is decent I don’t know if you’d find a parking spot out there in the afternoon. The last time I tried it the lot was full.

A 23″ bass out of Demontreville/Olson probably goes 6 pounds and if it’s out of Jane then about 5 1/4. Not too many “fatties” out there, probably due to the high number of fish and limited forage they have to split.
