I was out on one of my favorite Summer Metro lakes trying to see if I could get into some fish late yesterday afternoon. This would be the 3rd time I have fished on the ice this season. Up until yesterday, I had only logged about 4 measly hours on the ice I was solo, as for Stacie had homework and my brother was fixing his fish house from vandalism
I got set up on the break I was looking for at about 4:30. It was a gorgeous day and I instantly got action as soon as I got my line down. After a few perch in the 6-8″ range at the bottom half of the big break. I finally got my tip up set on top of the break in 9 fow. Since losing all my waypoints this Summer , I was trying to find the 7-8 foot top of the break where the rock pile is located, but could not find it last night . So I stayed content on being where I was .
The action was not fast and furious last night, but what a great night to be on the water. In the end, I ended putting 4 Walleyes, 5 perch and 1 crappie on the ice. The walleyes seemed to prefer JB, Varmit lures in Yellow /Orange or Fire Tiger patterns tipped with whole minnows. 3 of them came from the tip up in 9 feet of water, the other came on a slip bobber rig with a glowing varmit fire tiger in 18 fow. The perch and Crappie came from 18-25 feet of water at the bottom of the break. They took a small glow jig, tipped with a fathead. This is a huge structure with a very steep break. At days end, I had 5 flags, with only 3 walleyes coming to the surface. The other 2 just tripped it and took about 7-10 feet of line out.
I ended up releasing all my fish. Nothing very big came to the ice, as the biggest walleye was around the 15″ mark. But it felt good just to get out on the ice. I enjoyed a great afternoon and watched as the full moon slowly rose off the horizon . My bait selection was fatheads and rainbow minnows. I had 9-10 inches of ice depending on location.
That is all for today. I hope everyone can get out and get some time on the ice. Remember no ice is ever 100% safe. Stay safe and I hope you have plenty of tugs and flags on your next adventure!
